Luca Pescolldung is the real “Ironman”

The Spartan Race was created in America around 10 years ago; this sport has its origins in tough military training. There are three distances run: the sprint (5 to 10 kilometers), the medium distance (15 to 20 km), and the long distance (20 to 30 km), in between which various obstacles have to be overcome: crawling under the barbed wire, running over burning wooden beams, climb over a wall or swim through a canal. The rest is simple – the fastest wins.

Luca Pescolldung is a forest worker by profession and a year ago he became aware of this sport through a friend. The 2300-year-old finished his first competition in Kitzbühel - with 26 participants - in 22nd place! “I got bored with strength training, so I went running regularly. I found my sport in the Spartan Race,” explains Pescolldungg. The model athlete from Stern has now competed in 10 more competitions and, in addition to one victory (Wiener Neustadt), also has 6 podium places to his name. With these top results, Pesollderungg qualified for the European Championships and the World Cup. The Val Badia trains before and after working in the forest and sticks to a strict nutrition plan when it comes to eating. “I have to eat 5000 calories a day. But luckily my father is a chef,” says South Tyrol’s only world-class Spartan racer.

The European Championships begin this weekend in Andorra, the weather forecasts predict snow and wind - making the competition even tougher than it already is.

The World Championships are scheduled to take place in California (USA) at the end of September. Prize money of 500.000 euros will be distributed at the World Cup.

The Gadertaler is a newcomer to the so-called OCR competitions, but he still won the Wiener Neustadt Spartan Race, came second at the Verona Force Run and third at the Spartan Race Milano. Now the European Championships in Andorra and the World Cup in America are calling.
