New participant record at the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace

The record inspires the organizers, who have once again done everything to ensure that the extreme mountain run runs smoothly along the Horseshoe Tour in the Sarntal Alps.

The 806 trail runners from all parts of the world have been preparing for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace for months. This weekend is the test, which begins on Friday for around 220 participants on the original route (121 km/7554 meters in altitude). At 20 p.m. the starting signal for the 6th South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace will be fired at Waltherlplatz, the living room of the people of Bolzano.

On the longest distance, trail experts expect a four-way battle among the men between the South Tyroleans Alexander Rabensteiner and Jimmy Pellegrini, the Swiss Walter Manser and the German Matthias Dippacher. Jens Kramer from Steinegg, who is taking part in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace for the fifth time, could also be at the forefront. In the women's category, last year's winner from Sarn, Maria Kemenater, is the top favorite, who is being challenged by the Hungarian Ildiko Wermescher, who lives in Germany, the Dane Karin Brogger and the Trentino native Lorenza Bortoluzzi. Irene Senfter, another top local athlete, also enrolled at the last second.

On Saturday morning, however, the adventure for the participants in the South Tyrol Skyrace (7 a.m.) and the South Tyrol Sky Marathon (7.30 a.m.) begins on the Talferwiesen in Bolzano. The runners of the South Tyrol Sky Trail, who start from the church square in Sarnthein, have to wait until 9 a.m. There are also several top people on the three “short” distances, such as Johannes Klein (Germany), the South Tyrolean Stefan Tschurtschenthaler, Marie Ann Mcnaughton from Hong Kong and local hero Regina Spiess at the South Tyrol Skyrace.

The top favorite at the South Tyrol Sky Marathon is Andreas Reiterer, who is being challenged by his South Tyrolean compatriots Hansrudi Brugger and Alex Stuffer. Among the women, Birgit Bracke from Val Gardena is the favorite. Gertraud Höllrigl from Meran, who lives in Switzerland, Kathrin Rohleder from Germany and the Austrian Dominik Egger are the top runners on the newly introduced South Tyrol Sky Trail.

Exciting races await “We are looking forward to exciting races and are keeping our fingers crossed for all participants. Anyone who takes on the challenge is a winner. Our greatest wish is that the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace takes place without any injuries. The aspect of safety is very important to us. This is also guaranteed by the more than 80 mountain rescue and CNSAS volunteers along the route, who are in contact with the race management in Bolzano around the clock. “We can also locate the ultra participants via GPS for the first time,” explains OC boss Josef Günther Mair.

The first finish arrivals will be around 11 a.m.: The marathon runners will arrive in Sarnthein; in Bolzano it is the participants in the Sky Trail.
