New participant record at the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace

While 519 extreme athletes took part last year, this year the field of participants was expanded by 116 athletes to 635 starters. As far as the participating nations are concerned, the number has increased from 19 to 29 - numbers that make OC boss Josef Günther Mair rave.

“The South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is growing step by step. At the beginning of the year we set ourselves the goal of having 600 starters. We were even able to surpass this mark. It's also great that the athletes are roughly equally distributed across all three distances and we also have a lot of growth on the difficult original route with a length of 121 kilometers and 7554 meters in altitude. For women, we were able to almost double the number of starters,” explains Mair. 221 extreme athletes are taking part in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace this weekend, 189 are starting in the South Tyrol Skyrace (69 kilometers/3930 meters in altitude) and 225 want to reach the finish line in the Sky Marathon (42,2/2863).

Notoriety succumbed to international fame A major concern of the organizers is to make the run better known internationally. “When I consider that we were able to increase the number of participating nations by half compared to the previous year, then this can be seen as an outstanding success,” said Mair. Of the total of 635 participants, 391 come from Italy, 101 from Germany and 31 from Austria. The extreme athletes also include extreme mountain runners from Australia, Brazil, Japan and Canada.

The athletes, as well as their companions and the large number of expected spectators, can look forward to a colorful supporting program. At the start area at Waltherplatz in Bozen (on Friday evening from 19 p.m.) and at the weekend in the start/finish area on the Talferwiesen, all visitors to the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace will be well looked after by the helpers of the ASC Neugries. Even in Sarnthein, where the Sky Marathon ends or the participants in the Skyrace run through, all guests are pampered by the Sarnen footballers, as well as the team from “E11ar” and “Gasthof Post”. DJ Marlon and DJ Alex Stan provide the appropriate musical setting, while the announcers Josef Platter and Thomas Vonmetz ensure the good atmosphere.

The South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is organized by the amateur sports club of the same name in collaboration with athletes and La Sportiva. Around 500 volunteers are on duty, including the mountain rescue service in the Alpine Association of South Tyrol (BRD) and the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Alto Adige (CNSAS), which, together with the state emergency call center, ensure the safety of the participants.

New participant record at the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace

The registration deadline for the 17th South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace (July 5th to 28th) expired on Monday, July 30th. Since then it has been official: With 635 entries from 29 different nations, there is a new participant record for the extreme mountain run along the Horseshoe Tour in the Sarntal Alps.
