Ötzi Alpine Marathon: Six former winners at the start

Roland Osele has already won the Ötzi Alpine Marathon twice in his career. The 46-year-old from Merano also has several podium finishes to his name. He took second place in 2012 and third in 2011. Georg Piazza, 37 years old from Ortisei, won the extreme triathlon from Naturns to the Grawand on the Senales Glacier in 2012. This year the former top mountain biker would like to climb to the highest step on the winner's podium for the second time.

Oswald Weisenhorn also wants to go there. The Malser, born in 1970, came third in each of the past two years. Now he has set himself the goal of topping these results – and if possible even crossing the finish line first. Andreas Reiterer from Hafling, however, has not yet achieved a podium finish at the Ötzi Alpin Marathon. But thanks to his confident victory in the “Rittner Horn Attack” around a month ago, the 22-year-old youngster is now one of the closest favorites at the renowned competition in Senales Valley.

Oscar Camenzind is back at the start

Two-time winner Philip Götsch (2015, 2011), however, registered for the relay this year. The 32-year-old from Dorf Tirol is one of the contenders for victory in the team with Hannes Perkmann (Sarnthein) and the Austrian Hans Peter Obwaller (former professional cyclist). The organizers are very pleased about Oscar Camenzind's participation. The Swiss, who became road cycling world champion in Valkenburg in 1998, is taking part in the relay with the Lindenhof team together with Siegfried Weisenhorn and Markus Gemassmer.

Nina Brenn challenges Anna Pircher

Two former winners are also tackling the women's individual race. The Swiss Nina Brenn, born in 1979 from Flims, triumphed on the shortened course in 2013. Last year, however, local hero Anna Pircher took victory. The woman from Latscher was one of the first to register for this year's edition of the Ötzi Alpine Marathon. Besides Pircher, only Alexandra Hober (Meran) from South Tyrol has won the individual extreme triathlon race. That was in 2011. This year, Hober will tackle the Ötzi Alpine Marathon with a relay team of three, which she will form with Edeltraud Thaler (Lana) and Annemarie Gross (Meran). Hober has also triumphed several times in the team competition.

No victory, but second place in Brenn's triumph three years ago was Gerlinde Baldauf's best result. Like Pircher, she was born in 1974 and comes from Glurns. Maybe the woman from Vinschger will turn out to be the third laughing one in the Pircher-Brenn duel.

Is South Tyrol on par with Austria?

When it comes to individual victories, Austria is the most successful nation among men. An athlete who lives north of the Brenner Pass won six times. However, an athlete from South Tyrol won five times. In the women's category, Italy is the most successful nation with five wins, followed by Austria (3), Switzerland (2) and Germany (1). It will be interesting to see who will shine from the highest podium on Saturday.

Fan ticket for the Schnalstaler Gletscherbahn

The Schnalstaler Gletscherbahnen have come up with something special for all spectators who would like to experience the Ötzi Alpine Marathon up close on the Grawand on the Schnalstal Glacier. They provide sports enthusiasts with a discounted fan ticket at a price of 12 euros for ascent and descent (children 6 euros).
