Ötzi Alpine Marathon: route will be slightly adjusted

After the starting signal on Saturday, April 16th (9 a.m. for the individual participants, 10 a.m. for the three-person relay teams), everything remains the same on the first, 24,2 kilometer long section (954 meters in altitude) on the mountain bike. But after the first change in Unser Frau there is the first significant innovation. “The participants no longer run the loop past the Hotel Goldenes Kreuz towards Mastaun, but rather the shorter, but slightly steeper version to the shooting range and from there straight to junction number 15 to Vernagt,” explains Peter Rainer, OC head of the Ötzi Alpin Marathon. After that, the route is the same as before, but 500 meters shorter in total (11,3 kilometers in total).

The second change concerns the ascent to the Senales Glacier with touring skis. “Due to the completion of the 'Leo Gurschler' piste, this year it no longer goes up the steep section of the Gletschersee piste, but instead leads around the outside like an arch. This means that the climb is 500 meters longer, so it is 6,7 kilometers in total, but it is flatter,” continues Rainer. “Our ultimate goal was to maintain the marathon distance of 42,2 km. We succeeded thanks to these adjustments,” say the organizers of the alpine extreme triathlon, which is being held for the 13th time this year.

Over 300 participants from ten nations are expected

As far as training on the individual sections is concerned, climbing to the glacier with touring skis is still possible on Tuesdays from 18.30:22 p.m. to 15 p.m. The original running route will remain closed on the section from Unser Frau to the dam to Vernagt (path number 100) until race day due to logging work. “For training, we therefore recommend the route from the transition zone to the street intersection at the Hotel Schwarzer Adler and after about XNUMX meters, at the turnoff to the Berghotel Tyrol, up the streets towards Vernagt,” says Rainer and takes this opportunity to urge all athletes to stop pay attention to car traffic. “It should also be noted that there is currently still snow on the section between Gerstgras and Kurzras.”

The registration deadline for the Ötzi Alpine Marathon has not passed two weeks before the starting signal. Registrations for the top-class South Tyrolean sporting event will be accepted until April 6th. Over 300 participants from ten different nations are expected. The organizers believe that there will be a strong field of starters, especially for the women - which is also due to the fact that the prize money has been adjusted to that of the men.
