Peter Kienzl wants to know at the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace

Peter Kienzl is one of the best runners in the trail scene in Europe. Last year he took ninth place at the Tor des Geants in the Aosta Valley, one of the most demanding extreme mountain races in the world. The Haflinger came second at the Dolomiti Extreme Trail in June and he also achieved three absolute top results at the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace with a sixth (2013), a second (2014) and a third place last year. So it's no wonder that the 41-year-old is considered the number one favorite by experts to win the day.

Kienzl faces strong competition from two other local trail runners. On the one hand it is 33-year-old Daniel Jung. The native of Naturns won the Dolomiti Extreme Trail in Belluno a month ago, so he knows how to beat Kienzl. On the other hand, there is Marco Pozza (37 years old) from Bolzano, who has also already made a name for himself in the scene. The trio, together with the other 151 registered participants, are chasing Rabensteiner's course record of 17:52.24 hours.

Who will succeed Annemarie Gross?

The top field for women is much more international. Here too, Annemarie Gross from Meran, the three-time winner and record holder for the long distance (21:57.53 hours), is not at the start - she is taking part in the South Tyrol Sky Marathon this year. The Frenchwoman Stephanie Labruguiere could follow in her footsteps as winner on the original route. The 41-year-old from Paris is a very experienced trail runner, with starts all over Europe. Among other things, she was victorious in 2013 and 2014 in her home race, “The Trail 110” with an altitude of around 2600 meters, which takes place annually in May near the gates of Paris.

The American Birgit Mitchell, 45 years old from Silver Spring, who is starting for Austria, is also highly rated. And you also have to have a South Tyrolean on your list, namely Irene Senfter, born in 1971 from Lana, who has already been at the top of the winners' list in a number of running events. A total of 13 athletes are tackling the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace.

Hot duels on the marathon route

Several top athletes are also registered on the two shorter distances (South Tyrol Skyrace (69 km/3930), 177 starters/South Tyrol Sky Marathon (42,2/2863), 176 participants). The marathon distance is likely to be particularly exciting. In the women's race there will be a duel between Annemarie Gross and Lorenza Bortoluzzi (Sarnonico) from Trentino, born in 1980, who won the middle distance last year.

Andreas Reiterer and Josef Blasbichler, on the other hand, could have a hot dance for the marathon day victory among the men. The 49-year-old Klausner Blasbichler won the South Tyrol Skyrace in 2014 and took second place over the 69 km distance last year, beaten only by record holder Fulvio Dapit. Reiterer, 24 years old from Avelengo, climbed onto the podium in third place at the South Tyrol Skyrace last year.

It will be interesting to see who will be on the winners' lists of the 4th South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace this year.
