South Korea's ice climbers win in Rabenstein

The final of the difficult climbing on Sunday afternoon was not for the faint of heart. The two demanding routes that the route designers had devised for the finals demanded everything from the international ice climbing elite. So it's no wonder that only one athlete among men reached the top, i.e. the end of the route. Hee Yong Park, the vice world champion, reached the top one second before the time limit of 7.30 minutes expired.

It was Park's third stage victory and he also won the overall World Cup. The likeable crowd favorite from Asia beat the Russian world champion Maxim Tomilov and his compatriot Nikolai Kuzovlev to their places in Rabenstein. Both failed just below the top. Last year's winner Janez Svoljsak (Slovenia) missed qualifying for the final by a few seconds as she finished ninth in the semi-finals. The best from the semi-finals, the Swiss Yannick Glatthard, took seventh place at the Rabenstein ice tower.

Song repeats her success from last year

In the women's race, the numerous spectators from all parts of South Tyrol were of course hoping for a home win for Angelika Rainer from Meran. After top performances in the qualification and semi-finals, the 30-year-old misinterpreted a hold in the final run, lost a lot of time and ultimately slipped. In the end, the three-time world champion finished sixth. Rainer was happy about second place in the overall ranking.

The victory went to Han Na Rai Song from South Korea. Park's compatriot repeated her success from the previous year. The decisive factor was that she reached the top eleven seconds ahead of Maria Tolokonina from Russia, who also climbed to the end of the difficult route. Another South Korean woman, Woonseon Shin, took third place. The world champion's final stop was shortly before the finish. Like Park, Han Na Rai Song won the last three World Cup stages in Cheongsong, Saas Fee and Rabenstein and thus wrapped up the overall World Cup victory.

Russian six-fold successes in speed climbing

The Russian athletes confirmed their status as the fastest ice climbing nation by taking the top six places in the rankings of the two speed competitions. In the men's race, Pavel Batushev took victory in a hundredths thriller. Last year's third-place finisher covered the 15 meters vertical in 9,23 seconds and came out on top by 0,01 seconds over overall World Cup winner Vladimir Kartashev. Egor Trapeznikov, on the other hand, was happy about third place.

What was pleasing from the perspective of the organizers and the South Tyrolean ice climbing scene was the fact that two young people from Rabenstein, Christof Pfitscher (14th/13,71) and Hubert Brunner (17th/14,68), made it to the final. The third local hero, Stefan Pfitscher (22nd), narrowly failed to qualify despite a good performance (15,42).

Ekaterina Feoktistova won the women's event. Her time was 11,65 seconds. Maria Tolokonina, the winner of the discipline classification, took second place (12,48), Ekaterina Koshcheeva was third (13,16).
