South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace: The hunt for Daniel Jung can begin

After Alexander Rabensteiner's three wins in a row, Daniel Jung won the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace for the first time last year. The 34-year-old from Latsch completed the 121 kilometers and 7554 meters of altitude on the horseshoe tour in the Sarntal Alps in a new record time of 17:34.37 hours. 12 months later, the South Tyrolean extreme athlete wants to repeat his victory from last year - but faces strong competition from the Swiss Adrian Brennwald. Georg Piazza had also registered for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace - but due to illness, the strong Val Gardena native had to miss at short notice.

And that is not a small thing in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace, because for me it is still one of the most difficult ultras of all. Whether it will be me or someone else remains to be seen,” smiles defending champion Jung.

Gross is aiming for his fourth victory

For women, Annemarie Gross wants to win the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace for the fourth time in her career. Last year, the course record holder (21:57.53 hours) did not run the original distance, but instead took on the South Tyrol Sky Marathon and came second in this race. At that time, Irene Senfter from Lana won the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace, who Gross would like to challenge this year, as did Christiana Follador from Valdobbiadine, Cinzia Bertasa from Bergamo and the Frenchwoman Melanie Rousset.

Both defending champions are also at the start of the South Tyrol Skyrace (69 km/3930 meters altitude), which takes place on Saturday, July 29th at 7 a.m. on the Talferwiesen in Bolzano. Anton Eisenstecken from Neustift won the middle distance in 8:27.40 hours, Maria Kemenanter from Sarnen won in 9:56.59 hours. Here the Friulian Fulvio Dapit (7:04.44), who lives in Vipiteno, and the Polish ski mountaineer Anna Figura (8:50.49) hold the course record.

Hannes Perkmann is chasing records The South Tyrol Sky Marathon celebrated its premiere in 2016 and was immediately well received by the participants. Andreas Reiterer stayed just above the 4-hour limit in 01.41:4 hours. The Haflinger has to miss this year due to an injury, but announced on the social network Facebook that he would be cheering on Hannes Perkmann on the Sarner Scharte. The local hero wants to break Reiterer's record and is the top favorite to win the day over the 42,2 kilometers with 2863 meters of altitude.

A year ago, Birgit Klemm won the women's race in 5:16.04 hours. The Val Gardena native is in action this year, just like Lorenza Bortoluzzi from Sarnonico, who came third last year.
