South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace: Everything is ready a week before the start

The past months and weeks have been very intense. On the one hand, for the extreme athletes who take on the challenge of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace. They have hundreds of kilometers of training in their legs, dealing with the route, the different types of terrain, the weather and much more. The form has to be right on the first weekend in July, but the participants don't want to leave anything to chance. No wonder: 121 kilometers (7069 meters in altitude) on the long version and 66 kilometers (4260 meters in altitude) on the short version do not forgive any negligence during preparation.

But the organizing committee around OK boss Josef Günther Mair can also look back on a very intense time. The mega event has been planned from A to Z in countless meetings since the beginning of October. In addition to bureaucratic processes, ordering the material needed for extreme mountain running, finding partners and sponsors and preparing printed materials, the group of 450 volunteers had to be recruited and coordinated properly. “The preparations are not yet completely finished. But of course the rough details are a week before the starting signal. Now we're going into fine-tuning so that everything runs smoothly during the race," promises Mair, who is also chairman of GRW Sarntal, which, together with its partners Athesia, Dynafit and Athletes, is the sponsor of this extreme mountain run.

Great attention to marking During the preparation, great attention was paid to the route markings. This year the route will be marked with yellow flags that reflect the light from the athletes' headlamps at night. Spray and tape are also used to mark particularly critical path junctions. “If you have a GPS device, you should stick to it. We have made all route data available on our website and hope that they will also be used,” explains Mair.

The organizers were very worried about the snowy winter and the associated snowmelt in spring, which was very slow this year. But here, too, the all-clear was given a week before the starting signal. The route on which the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is run is largely free of snow. “There are some snowfields at the Tellerjoch, at the Fahnerscharte, the Hörtlaner Scharte, the Screejoch and in the area around the Sarner Weißhorn. However, several participants who were on these sections of the route for training purposes assured us that these snowfields could be crossed without any problems. Nevertheless, we would like to remind all participants once again that extreme caution is required in these areas,” said Mair.

Great supporting program in Bolzano

An extensive supporting program was developed together with the city of Bolzano, which is also an important partner of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace. On Friday, July 4th, the duo Banana Rabbit will perform at the Palais Campofranco from 18 p.m. to 19 p.m., before Elisa Venturin and her band will warm up the hundreds of spectators directly at Waltherplatz from 20.30:22.30 p.m. to 22:XNUMX p.m. The highlight is of course the starting signal for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace at XNUMX p.m. sharp.

“But things also go off on Saturday and Sunday. The action moves from the city center to the valley meadows. In the finish area, the well-known band “Moscaburro” gives two concerts on Saturday from 16 p.m. to 23 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 15 p.m. In between, the heroes will be celebrated again and again, who will be overjoyed to reach the finish line of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace,” promises OK boss Mair in conclusion.
