South Tyroleans dominate Maddalene SkyMarathon

With Georg Piazza from Val Gardena, Julia Kessler from Merano and Thomas Holzmann from Jenesien, three runners from South Tyrol stood at the top of the podium.

The mountain runners set off from the village square in Our Lady of the Forest at exactly 7.00 a.m. sharp. Georg Piazza from Val Gardena immediately took the lead, followed by Francesco Trenti, Gabriele Fedrizzi (Maddalene Sky Team), Giovanni Ruocco (Team Anima Trail) and Josef Thaler from Ulten (Team Vertikal Ulten). Piazza controlled the run and crossed the finish line first after 44,5 kilometers and 1.500 meters of altitude with a time of 4:44:56 hours. He improved his time from last year by around 10 minutes.

Giovanni Ruocco and Gabriele Fedrizzi landed in second and third place.

Ex aequo victory for the women In the women's race, Julia Kessler from Meran and Giuliana Pe' from Brescia crossed the finish line at the same time (6:43:27 hours). After the first third of the run, the young South Tyrolean was able to catch up with the strong runner from The North Face Team. “It was my first time taking part in the SkyMarathon. I started a bit cautiously and only after the Kessel Alm did I increase the pace and was able to catch up with Graziana. We had the same pace, so we decided to run to the finish together,” said the happy winner at the finish line. The Austrian Marlene Nagele from the Achensee running team secured third place on the podium with a time of 6:53:36.

Victory in the combined ranking of the South Tyrol SkyMarathon and Maddalene SkyMarathon was won by Julia Kessler for the women with a total time of 12:57:59 hours and for the men by Rainhard Pixner with a time of 10:31:12 hours. Holzmann and Marchesoni win the fourth edition of the Maddalene Mountain Race The victory of the Maddalene Mountain Race from Our Lady in the Forest to Rumo over 25 km also went to a South Tyrolean athlete. Thomas Holzmann (Jenesien) was the first to reach the finish in Rumo with a time of 2:28:13 hours. Second place was shared by South Tyroleans Martin Berger and Ivan Favretto. In the women's race, the young runner from Atletica Clarina Trento Giulia Marchesoni won with a time of 03:01:27 hours, ahead of Elisa Pallina (CSC Cortenuova) and Ilaria Pallani (Polisportiva Bovisio Masciago).

The finale of the mountain running season on the Nonsberg will take place on October 27, 2018 with the vertical mountain run on the Laugen.
