Transalpine Run: Daniel Jung and Ivan Paulmichl second overall

Three teams crossed the finish line in Sulden at the same time today after 3:43.57 hours: the brothers Marc and Oscar Casal from Andorra, the two Vinschgers Daniel Jung and Ivan Paulmichl and the Germans Benjamin Sperl and Lukas Nägele. These are the three teams that also decided on the overall ranking (in that order). “We agreed today to start together so that we can still enjoy the last stage,” says Daniel Jung. The non-aggression pact suited them as a team after Ivan Paulmichl in particular had reached the end of his strength: "The way Ivan fought until the end is impressive - hats off!" said Jung. Crossing the finish line together was a successful conclusion to the tough battle that the teams had fought on all eight stages of this year's Transalpine Run. The triple victory did not change the overall standings: The Casal brothers prevailed with a total time of 28:33.15 hours, 17.14 minutes ahead of Daniel Jung and Ivan Paulmichl. Third place overall goes to the Sperl/Nägele team (backlog: 1:18.19 hours). “We can only congratulate the two runners from Andorra, they were incredibly consistent and unbeatable this year,” said Jung. Secretly they expected a good placing, but Jung and Paulmichl never thought it would go so well. Jung: “After the first stages and the days in the leader’s jersey, we thought we were in the wrong film.” They were very satisfied with second place, and not just from a sporting perspective: "We not only gained experience, but also friends," is Jung's conclusion.

Wenin brothers take victory in the senior master category The fight for overall victory in the Senior Master category, in which both team members must be over 100 years old, was exciting until the last minute. The two people from Ultimo, Oswald and Richard Wenin, were able to turn the tide in their favor with their sixth consecutive day's victory on the last stage. The lead of 23.38 minutes over the German team Jörg Schreiber/Thomas Miksch, who were also in second place today, was enough to push them into second place in the overall ranking with a lead of almost 13 minutes. Third today were the Swiss Thomas Sommer and Kurt Scherrer, who also secured third place overall in the Senior Master category, more than three and a half hours behind. "Yesterday we smelled the morning air and thought to ourselves: we won't be settled until we reach the finish line," said an overjoyed Oswald Wenin. The tactic of the two Ultners was simple: “Give it full throttle, if it goes well, it goes well,” said Wenin. Overall, it was a great transalpine run in which both of them never gave up. “We didn’t let ourselves be deterred after the first stage, in which everything that could go wrong went wrong,” said Wenin. Because of the murderous heat and stomach cramps, they had lost more than an hour on Schreiber/Miksch from Oberstdorf to Lech. With six daily victories and, above all, two confident final stages, they were able to reduce this deficit step by step and ultimately even turn it into a lead.

Annemarie Gross and Franz Kröss win the Master Mixed category Finally, Annemarie Gross and Franz Kröss were in a class of their own in the Master Mixed category. With four daily victories, three second places and one third place as well as a total time of 34:09.44, the Gross/Kröss team was ultimately able to gain a lead of more than 1:15 hours over the second-placed German team of Andrea Feuerstein-Rauch and Petru Muntenasu. Corine Kagerer and Marco Jäger from Switzerland came third in the overall ranking, more than two hours behind. The fact that it was such a confident victory was also a surprise for the Gross/Kröss team itself: "I had a strong partner, so I could count on a place on the podium, but that it went so well..." said Franz Kröss today after crossing the finish line. For Annemarie Gross, good cooperation with her partner was a key to success: "The most important thing is that you get along well, that there is a good team spirit and there should also be a bit of fun," says Gross. Every day was tough - also because of the heat - but they managed the race well tactically. “We know that billing will only take place after eight days,” says Gross. Incidentally, Gross and Kröss finished today's stage in the Master Mixed category in second place, 7.31 minutes behind the victorious German team Eva Färberböck and Mathis Bode. Kagerer/Jäger came third today, 12.12 minutes behind. With today's stage, the kilometers run in this year's edition of the Transalpune Run add up to almost 270, and the altitude difference to be overcome in the ascent alone amounts to around 16.000. Understandably, not all teams endured these hardships. One in three of the over 300 teams that started in Oberstdorf, Bavaria, last Sunday had to end the race early. Two more of the South Tyrolean teams made it to the finish line: Annelis Felderer and Markus Planötscher came seventh overall in the master mixed category, and Lord Jens Kramer and Martin Mair came 16th in the master class.
