Transalpine Run: The first winners have been announced

With the third fastest time of the day (4:25.25,7 hours), Eugen Innerkofler from Niederdorf and Ivano Molin from Misurina (BL) celebrated their first victory after several podium places in the master class, where both runners must be at least 80 years old. They managed to defeat the French, who were used to winning and were leaders in the overall standings. Pascal Giguet / David Pasquio to relegate to second place with 6.10 minutes.

“It's nice to win at home, it couldn't be better,” says Eugen Innerkofler, who won the Alpine crossing in 2007 together with Manfred Wurzer. “The stage suited us very well. After the Pragser Wildsee we caught up extremely and overtook the French on the Weißlahnscharte.”

There was also an exciting race in the Senior Master class. The Ahrntalers Peter Paul Steinhauser (61) and Michael Steger (41) prevailed with a 51 second lead over Rudi Schöpf/Alfred Psenner, but had to fight hard for it.

“Schöpf and Psenner overtook us at Pragser Wildsee,” says Michael Steger, to which Schöpf, who runs with a damaged rib, comments: “As soon as there was a climb, the Ahrntalers were off like rockets.”

In the Master Mixed category, Annelise Felderer and Markus Planötscher (Team Niederdorf) won, while Daniel Jung (with an injured thigh) and Ivan Paulmichl came third in the men's category. The fastest of the day were the Germans Stephan Hugenschmidt and Mirco Berner in 3:58.15,8 hours.

The South Tyrolean women came second, 8.29 minutes behind the German-Austrian duo Kathrin Layerl / Yvonne Lehnert. “We had to slow down a bit today due to the pain,” says Tamara Lunger. “But tomorrow we have to really bite again because we don’t want to miss out on this victory,” said last year’s runner-up.

The final stage of the Gore-Tex® Transalpine Run 2014 leads from Niederdorf over 33,40 km/1.269 m above sea level to Sexten.

Transalpine Run: The first winners have been announced

The South Tyrolean participants completed the seventh and penultimate stage from St. Vigil over 42 kilometers and 2000 meters in altitude to Niederdorf with three victories. The master runners conquered one of them for the first time. The local athletes have so far won in four of six categories.
