Transalpine Run: Jung and Paulmichl with first podium place

The sensation on Tuesday was provided by the two Vinschgers, Daniel Jung and Ivan Paulmichl. The mountain bike specialist from Naturns and the geotechnician from Laatsch celebrated their first podium finish in the strong men's category. The two local extreme athletes took third place behind the winning duo Stephan Hugenschmidt/Mirco Berne from Germany and the Spaniards David Lopez Castan/Alfredo Gil. Although they benefited from the elimination of the previously leading Swedes Johan Johannson and André Jonsson, this did not affect their performance. “It’s simply brilliant,” says Daniel Jung. “The first stages were too flat for our taste. Now that the inclines in the terrain are increasing, we can fully utilize our performance.”

Tamara Lunger and Annemarie Gross have been doing this for four days. On the first purely South Tyrolean stage they achieved their fourth victory in a row, 18 minutes ahead of the Germans Carmen Otto and Anne Gerlach. “It’s getting harder every day,” explains K2 conqueror Tamara Lunger. There were wintry conditions at altitude and my partner Annemarie Gross had to struggle with stomach problems today.”

Meanwhile, Annelise Felderer and Markus Planötscher celebrated their third victory in a row in the Master Mixed category. The 47-year-old from Bolzano and the 37-year-old from Sarnen relegated the Spanish duo Roberto and Maria Pilar Prades to second place by 13 minutes and further extended their lead in the overall ranking. “We are work colleagues and have been preparing together all summer to cross the Alps on foot,” says Markus Planötscher.

In the Senior Master class, the Ahrntalers Peter Paul Steinhauser and Michael Steger won for the second time and thus took the overall lead in the category ranking ahead of Rudi Schöpf and Alfred Psenner, who came second. “The many climbs benefit us,” says Michael Steger. “Schöpf and Psenner are stronger than us in the flat passages and downhill.” In the master class, Eugen Innerkofler and Ivano Molin from Misurina (BL) came third again. The two forest guard employees won the Dolomiti Extreme Trail in Zoldo at the same time last year.

Tomorrow the participants can pedal a little more quietly. The fifth stage leads from Sand in Taufers to Speikboden. This is a mountain sprint over 6,44 km/1.074 m.

The spectacular Alpine crossing on foot and in teams of two ends after eight days, 293 km and around 14.000 meters in altitude on September 6th in Sexten. 350 teams of two from over 30 nations, including eleven South Tyrolean teams, are taking part in the race.
