Transalpine Run: Two home victories in the first South Tyrolean stage

Two teams dominated this year's Transalpine among men: the brothers Marc and Oscar Casal from Andorra and the Vinschgers Daniel Jung and Ivan Paulmichl. And this picture hasn't changed in today's seventh and therefore penultimate stage. Casal/Casal celebrated their fifth day's victory in St. Valentin in a time of 3:30.55, with a lead of 8.15 minutes over Jung/Paulmichl, who still have two day's victories. "Ivan had bad stomach problems yesterday and that's why he lacked a bit of energy today," said Daniel Jung. He is therefore happy that today's stage was completed so well. In the overall ranking, the runners from Andorra were able to extend their lead over the local heroes to 17.14 minutes. "The brothers are tough guys and have ideal physical conditions," said Jung, who believes that even in their own best condition the two would have been hard to beat: "But if we end up with second place, we'll be more than satisfied," explains Jung, "We would have signed that immediately before the start."

Gross/Kröss celebrate their fourth victory of the day You can also rely on the Annemarie Gross/Franz Kröss team, which also has an impressive record. Today was her fourth win of the day, plus three more podium places. Today Gross/Kröss crossed the finish line in St. Valentin after 4:19.27 hours, gaining a lead of 6.30 minutes over the Swiss team Corine Kagerer and Marco Jäger. Third place went to the Germans Eva Färberböck and Mathis Bode, 10.14 minutes behind. In the overall standings, Gross/Kröss lead the Andrea Feuerstein-Rauch/Petru Muntenasu team by more than an hour ahead of tomorrow's final stage. “If we reach the finish in Sulden, then that should be enough,” said Franz Kröss today after crossing the finish line. There's no need to worry too much that the two of them won't reach the finish line: "We're both still feeling good," said Kröss.

Ultner brothers Oswald and Richard Wenin dominate the Senior Master category The Ultner brothers Oswald (50) and Richard Wenin (54), who dominate the Senior Master category in terms of daily victories, are also a bank. Today was her fifth win in a row. With a time of 4:10.44 hours, they were over 32 minutes ahead of the Swiss team Thomas Sommer/Kurt Scherrer. Third place went to Ultner's closest competitors, the Germans Jörg Schreiber and Thomas Miksch. Today they lost 36.23 minutes to Wenin/Wenin. At the finish, Oswald Wenin himself was surprised at how big the lead over Schreiber/Miksch was: "We were only told here that they had lost a lot to us today, we didn't see them again on the route," said Wenin. This despite the fact that his brother Richard didn't have the best day and was tired. After today's brilliant performance by the two people from Ultimo, Schreiber/Miksch's lead in the overall ranking in this category has shrunk to just 10.42 minutes. “Our goal was always to arrive in Sulden and then see what emerges,” says Oswald Wenin, “but now hope is alive!” Finally, the second place that Trentino's Andrea Gottardi and Silvano Fedel achieved today in the men's master class is also noteworthy. They reached St. Valentin with the sixth best time overall of 3:59.40, just 2.20 minutes behind the outstanding pairing of Urs Jenzer and Ruedi Bärtschi from Switzerland in this category. Today's seventh stage, the first of two with the finish in South Tyrol, was almost comfortable by Transalpine Run standards, but no less spectacular for that. In particular, the path through the Uina Gorge and the panoramic trails in the Sesvenna Group were among the scenic highlights of this year's route. In total, the stage was 37,8 kilometers long and took the runners over 1633 meters in altitude and 1369 meters in descent to the south side of the main Alpine ridge.

The race ends tomorrow in Sulden

Tomorrow we first go down from St. Valentin to Glurns, from there via Gomagoi to the Tabaretta gap (2903 meters) and to Bärenjoch (2871 meters), before after 42,6 kilometers, 2381 meters in altitude and 1934 meters in descent Sulden sports center is reached, where the 11th Trasnalpine Run ends. In eight stages, the runners covered more than 268 kilometers and 16.310 meters of altitude in the climb alone.

The Gore-Tex Transalpine Run 2015 reached South Tyrol today. At the stage finish in St. Valentin auf der Haide, two South Tyrolean daily victories and a second place were celebrated.
