Ultra Skyrace: The defending champion is back at the start

On July 27th, Maria Kemenater takes on the strain of the 121 kilometers with an altitude difference of 7554 meters. Then Annemarie Gross' record could fall.

50 days before the starting signal for the 6th edition of the extreme mountain run along the Horseshoe Tour in the Sarntal Alps, the organizers announce the first “hit” for the participants. With Maria Kemenater, the defending champion is back. “We were very happy about Maria’s victory last year and everyone in the OK team warmly wished her success. The fact that she wants to know again this year makes us all very happy. As a Sarner native and therefore a local hero, she is an important driving force for our event. The entire Sarntal will be keeping its fingers crossed for her this year too. And of course her many fans will hope that she breaks the course record this year. Last year she was only a mere 25 seconds short of it,” says OC boss Josef Günther Mair.

Maria Kemenater doesn't make any big noises before her home race and doesn't put herself under unnecessary pressure. The defending champion analyzes the situation objectively and is, as usual, modest – just as is her style. “My goal in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is simply to get through it healthy. Of course it would be great if I could keep the time from last year or maybe even improve it a little. Who my strongest competitors will be depends on who else registers in the next few weeks. In the race itself, the only question is who will ultimately fight through the best,” explains the 47-year-old from Sarnen.

Who could challenge Maria Kemenater for her second victory in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is still completely open a good month and a half before the starting signal. “We don't want to name any names yet, but we are in touch with some very strong athletes. There will be clarity in this regard in the next few weeks. But Maria has the not inconsiderable home advantage and knows almost every stone and every root on the route,” says OC boss Josef Günther Mair, who is still keeping a low profile.

Last weekend, Maria Kemenater proved that last year's winner is in good shape at the Hochkönigman, a partner race of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace. In the Endurance Trail over a distance of 85 kilometers with 5000 meters of altitude, she took second place and was only beaten by the Austrian Martina Trimmel, almost 18 minutes behind.

Ultra Skyrace: The defending champion is back at the start

Last year Maria Kemenater won the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace for women. With a winning time of 21:58.18 hours, she missed the course record by less than half a minute.
