X-Alps: spectacle on Mont Blanc

Both struggled to gain altitude on the east side of the mountain, the sunny side, but every time they caught some rising warm air they were pushed back down by a westerly wind. It went up and down for 15 minutes. Suddenly, as they struggled to get over the ridge, another athlete joined them: Frenchman Benoît Outters, who had run 78 km on foot due to bad weather two days earlier. Pinot was the first to reach the necessary height. But instead of letting it fly away, Maurer and Outters worked together to find the necessary lift. Eventually they made it to the top and set off in pursuit of Pinot at 40 km/h. Incredible level Ulrich Grill, the race organizer, says: “The race is in full swing and more exciting than ever before. The top three athletes have never been so close together with so many challengers right behind them. It's unbelievable how the top athletes push each other. All eyes are now on Mont Blanc. It is the biggest mountain and the biggest challenge along this route, the toughest in the history of the Red Bull X-Alps.” In order to conquer the Turnpoint Mont Blanc, the athletes have to cross it to the west and cross the border into Italy this way. This means they either have to have enough altitude to overcome a pass - the 3.342m high Col de Miage - or it will be a brutal climb on foot, which would add at least 20 kilometers of track and around 2.000 meters of elevation gain to the route. All three of them want to avoid that at all costs on a day with the most promising weather yet. South Tyroleans go hand in hand After two eliminations and two injury-related withdrawals, only 25 athletes remain in the race, including Aaron Durogati and Tobias Großrubatscher. The two South Tyroleans are almost tied in seventh and eighth place respectively.

X-Alps: spectacle on Mont Blanc

A wooded ridge above the French village of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps in the Haute Savoie department was the scene of a thrilling duel on Saturday between six-time champion Chrigel Maurer and challenger Maxime Pinot as they set their sights on the Mont Blanc massif.
