Two Bavarians triumph at the Drei-Zinnen-Run

With a winning time of 1:42.34 hours, Maier not only set a new course record in Sexten - it was also the first triumph of a German mountain runner in the 20-year history of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run.

In high fog and temperatures around 13 degrees Celsius - perfect running weather - the starting signal for the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run was given at 10 a.m. at Haus Sexten. After the traditional village round, a group of six with the two Kenyans Robert Surum and Francis Njoroge, the Italian Luca Cagnati, the Sarner Hannes Perkmann, the German Anton Palzer and the Austrian Manuel Seibald were already a few meters ahead of the rest of the field. After around 8 kilometers, a group of five arrived at the valley end hut after just over half an hour, consisting of Njoroge, Surum, Palzer, Perkmannn and Cagnati. The climb then began and here Palzer and Perkmann soon broke away from the rest of the field.

On the part of the route up to the Zsigmondyhütte, Palzer also shook off Perkmann and gained a lead of around a minute over the South Tyrolean. Behind them came Cagnati and Njoroge. At the highest point of the race, at Büllelejoch, Palzer was already two minutes ahead. By now it was clear that the 25-year-old from Bavaria could no longer take victory away from him. In fact: After 1:29.31 hours, Anton Palzer, who had already won the Drei Zinnen Ski Raid ski touring race in March, reached the finish and secured the day's victory.

Belluno's Luca Cagnati (Canale d'Agordo) took second place, 2.08 minutes behind Palzer, while Hannes Perkmann completed the podium in third (1:33.01). For Cagnati it was the first top 3 result at the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run, for Perkmann it was the third after third place in 3 and second place in 2015. Among the women, Michelle Maier was in a class of her own. Just a week after taking second place at the Jungfrau Marathon, the 27-year-old broke away just a few meters after the start in Sexten, then left no stone unturned on the 17,5 kilometer route with 1350 meters of altitude and crossed the finish line at number three Zinnen Hut at 2405 meters above sea level after 1:42.34 hours. In doing so, Michelle Maier improved New Zealander Anna Frost's nine-year-old course record by 25 seconds and also secured the first daily victory for a mountain runner from Germany at the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. Second place went to the Swiss Victoria Kreuzer, who recorded a time of 1:48.21 hours. The Swiss won the mountain run in the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in 2014 and took third place in 2016. Third place in the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018 went to Petra Pircher from Laas. The 47-year-old completed the demanding mountain run in a time of 1:53.08 hours. Curious highlight As part of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018, the 15.000th finisher crossed the finish line since the first edition in 1998. Curiously, it is a South Tyrolean: Angelika Hinteregger from Kastelruth from the LG Schlern took 2rd place in 18.32:233. A total of 1000 mountain runners from 23 different nations registered for the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run on Saturday. The South Tyrolean mountain running spectacle was once again sold out. Two Bavarians triumph at the Drei-Zinnen-Run

Anton Palzer (Ramsau/Berchtesgaden) and Michelle Maier (Bad Aibling) are the winners of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018. The 21st edition of the South Tyrolean mountain running classic on Saturday in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site was all about the athletes from Bavaria.
