Relegation after 55 years: The HSV decline in fast motion

After 55 years, Hamburger SV is saying goodbye to the Bundesliga. The 2-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday was HSV's last game on the first floor for the time being. The first relegation of the Bundesliga founding member is the end of a negative development that has been going on for five years. HSV's ongoing relegation battle since 2013:

2013/14: Disaster season ends with Dusel rescue under Slomka With a meager 27 points, the most goals conceded (75) and two relegation games without a win against second division team Fürth, Dusel was saved. “We used up all our luck,” admitted Mirko Slomka. The season's number three coach after Thorsten Fink and Bert van Marwijk only achieved three wins in 15 games. HSV still stayed in because the relegated Nuremberg and Braunschweig were even weaker. Striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga comes to the rescue with 13 goals this season and the golden relegation away goal in Fürth. 2014/15: Labbadia show of strength and renewed relegation luck save HSV Everything should get better with the spin-off of the professional department into a football club. But again we had to shake violently. After Slomka, Joe Zinnbauer and Peter Knäbel, it was thanks to coach number four Bruno Labbadia with ten points from six games that HSV even made it into relegation. There Marcelo Diaz scored HSV's free kick goal to make it 1-1 at the last minute at Karlsruher SC in extra time. Then Nicolai Müller scored the victory - HSV, who were once again unlucky, were still under species protection. 2015/16: Supposed upswing raises expectations that are too high In the season without a change of coach, Labbadia led HSV to tenth place with a 3-1 win at FC Augsburg on the last matchday. But the good placement in the final table belied the fact that the northern club had to fight for a long time to stay in the league after another season without consistent performances. At least captain Johan Djourou & Co. were spared further tremors until the last minute. Conversely, the supposed upturn immediately led to exaggerated HSV hopes and expectations. 2016/17: The roller coaster ride of the season ends with a happy ending under Gisdol When the change of coach from Labbadia to Markus Gisdol initially didn't work after the false start, HSV seemed defeated. Gisdol responded with a few personnel changes - things were looking up until the winter break. 2017 started with setbacks. Then HSV reared up until it went downhill again shortly before the end. But it was enough for a happy ending: On the last matchday, HSV won against Wolfsburg with a Waldschmidt goal in the 88th minute. Instead of HSV, VfL had to go into relegation. Even in the 54th league year, HSV remained irrelegable. 2017/18: Despite a dream start: HSV has to go to the 2nd league The series is broken, HSV is relegated to the 2nd league for the first time in the club's history. The 55th season started promisingly. After two wins, Hamburg were even top of the table for one night. But appearances were deceptive: after that it just went steeply downhill. The change of coach from last year's savior Gisdol to Bernd Hollerbach also didn't help. His successor Christian Titz brought the Dino back into shape with a new game idea and a makeover, but HSV's final spurt with 13 points in eight games came too late.

Relegation after 55 years: The HSV decline in fast motion

With a 2-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, HSV's Bundesliga story came to an end after 55 years. After five years of constant relegation battles, the luck of the founding member, who has never been relegated, has run out.
