Effective Frankfurters win in Hoffenheim

Three days after the exhilarating Europa League success against Lazio Rome (4:1), the cup winners celebrated a 2:1 (1:0) win in the Bundesliga against the Champions League starters from Kraichgau. Ante Rebic (40th), who later saw yellow-red (64th), and Luka Jovic (46th) scored the goals for the guests. Reiss Nelson (82nd) shortened for Hoffenheim.

While Frankfurt has finally forgotten the weak start to the season by winning its third competitive game in a row and climbed to seventh place, Hoffenheim, who were previously equal in points and goals, have to look their way down. With seven points, coach Julian Nagelsmann's team only has two points more than bottom team VfB Stuttgart.

Unlike the premier class highlight against Manchester City (1:2) during the week, Hoffenheim found itself forced into the defensive in the opening minutes. The guests from Frankfurt seemed livelier and more aggressive in the wonderful football weather, but initially failed to convert this into scoring opportunities. Instead, Hoffenheim had the first real chance of the game through Nico Schulz (14th).

A lively duel developed at a good level. However, there was no real excitement for a long time before things suddenly came to a head in the 29th minute of the game. First Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp parried from Adam Szalai while sitting, then Ishak Belfodil headed the rebound onto the crossbar and in direct response, runner-up world champion Rebic ultimately unsuccessfully called for a penalty after a duel.

Hoffenheim now seemed to be in control, the first goal for the hosts was only a matter of time. National player Kerem Demirbay dribbled his way through the Frankfurt defense, but once again only hit the aluminum with his impressive lob. Instead, Rebic struck coldly on a counterattack and lifted the ball into the goal over Oliver Baumann, who had advanced too far.

The last half hour of the entertaining game became turbulent again. Rebic (62') first missed a good opportunity and then had to leave the field after an unnecessary foul on the halfway line. Hoffenheim now threw everything forward and had good opportunities, including a nice backheel trick from Szalai (64') and a long-range shot from Demirbay (67'). Nelson, who came on after an hour, made things exciting again shortly before the end, before Trapp prevented the equalizer with a brilliant deed against Demirbay in stoppage time.

Leipzig in second place with a shooting festival against Nuremberg RB Leipzig impressively continued its upswing with the highest Bundesliga win in the club's history and handed 1. FC Nürnberg the next embarrassing debacle. The resurgent Saxons deservedly won 6-0 (4-0) against the completely overwhelmed newcomers on Sunday and took second place in the table with their third league win in a row.

Leipzig, which lost only one of its last nine games in all competitions after a mediocre start to the season, was already in the lead thanks to goals from Kevin Kampl (3rd), Yussuf Poulsen (7th), Marcel Sabitzer (21st) and national player Timo Werner (32nd). Everything was clear in the first half. After the break, Sabitzer (55th) and Werner (59th), who also missed a penalty (63rd), added further. For Werner it was Bundesliga goals 37.389 and 50 in front of 51 spectators. Nuremberg's Tim Leibold caused the penalty with an emergency stop on Werner and was shown a red card.

Nuremberg did not overcome its chronic weakness away from home in Leipzig - on the contrary. Almost two weeks after the 0-7 debacle at Borussia Dortmund, the Franconians were once again desolate, and the club was once again miles away from their first away win of the season.
