Series expanded: Bayern increase Schalke's worries

While S04 coach Domenico Tedesco only made two changes in contrast to the Champions League duel against FC Porto (1:1), Niko Kovac converted his team to four positions after the success at Benfica Lisbon (2:0). Among other things, ex-Schalke player Leon Goretzka moved into the starting line-up. 133 days after his last game for the Royal Blues, the national player, like Manuel Neuer, was loudly booed before the game.

After four minutes, Bayern had already won three corners and Thomas Müller fired the first warning shot (6th). The visitors' fourth corner gave them the lead. James headed Joshua Kimmich's cross in unchallenged. It was the Colombian's second goal of the season and Schalke's third goal this season after a corner. With the lead behind them, Bayern initially acted confidently. The hosts showed great respect and initially didn't get into duels at all. Goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann prevented David Alaba (21') and James (25') from going further behind, and a header from Robert Lewandowski went just over the goal (22'). Alaba was also unlucky with a free kick from 30 meters onto the crossbar (29th). After half an hour, a few mistakes crept into the German record champions' game. The Munich team started the second half more focused again. After a nice combination via Müller and Franck Ribery, James pushed the ball slightly under pressure but past the empty goal (50th). A minute later, James fouled his opponent Weston McKennie and the Schalke player had to leave the field injured. Defense chief Naldo headed the subsequent free kick just wide (53').

Schalke now increased the risk, became bolder and disrupted Munich earlier. This caused Bayern to have slight problems. But then the hosts helped them. Alessandro Schöpf fouled James in the penalty area, Lewandowski converted the penalty into his third goal of the season.
