Victory in the top game: FC Bayern closes in on Dortmund

The German football record champions confidently won the top game on Saturday evening at Borussia Mönchengladbach 5:1 (2:1) and are therefore level on points after the 24th matchday behind BVB, who won a surprising 1:2 at FC Augsburg on Friday had accomplished.

Bayern, now nine points behind Dortmund, are now in direct contact with the top of the table for the first time in more than five months. Javi Martinez (2nd) and Thomas Müller (11th) gave Munich the lead in a brilliant opening phase before Lars Stindl (37th) scored the next goal. But striker Robert Lewandowski (47th, 90th + 1/foul penalty) shortly after the restart and Serge Gnabry (75th) with Bayern's 4000th Bundesliga goal made the decision. For coach Niko Kovac's team it was the eleventh win in the last twelve league games. At Gladbach, however, the earnings crisis was prolonged. After their fourth game without a win and their third home defeat in a row, the Rhinelanders slipped to fourth place and therefore still have to worry about participation in the Champions League. Borussia coach Dieter Hecking trusted the same team that took three points from the Allianz Arena in the sensational 3-0 win in the first leg. The plan to repeat the sensation in front of their own fans didn't initially work.

Bayern started the encounter with great enthusiasm in a sold-out Borussia Park in front of 54.022 spectators. Martinez, who replaced the injured Leon Goretzka, scored his second goal of the season with a header from James' corner. He had previously pushed opponent Nico Elvedi away, but the video assistant did not intervene. The Kovac team continued to step on the gas, restricting Gladbach in their own half - and Müller, who was in the starting line-up for the first time in three Bundesliga games, consequently increased the score to 2-0.

Borussia got into the game a little better after a quarter of an hour, after which Bayern tried their luck on the counterattack. While Lewandowski (22nd) and Gnabry (33rd) failed due to Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer's outstanding performance, Fohlen captain Stindl created tension again with a well-placed shot into the short corner. But just a few seconds after the break, Gladbach's euphoria was gone again. First James (46th) missed from a good position, then Lewandowski restored the comfortable lead with his 14th Bundesliga goal.

Borussia then held up well; a free kick from Oscar Wendt (52') narrowly missed the Bayern goal. Gnabry secured the final point with his sixth goal of the season.
