Spectacular victory: BVB plunges Bayern into the valley of tears

FC Bayern is threatened with losing its long-standing supremacy in German football. After six championships in a row, arch-rival Borussia Dortmund appears to be well on its way to overtaking the record champions. With the 3-2 win in the top-class Bundesliga summit, the league leaders increased the gap to Munich to seven points. In front of 81 spectators in the sold-out Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, Marco Reus (365th/foul penalty/49th) and Paco Alcácer (67st) ensured Borussia's victory.

The third defeat in the eleventh game of the season is likely to cause new unrest in Munich and further weaken the position of coach Niko Kovac. A penalty whistle from referee Manuel Gräfe shortly after the restart after Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer fouled Reus suddenly brought Borussia back into the game. But the joy over Reus' confidently converted penalty only lasted three minutes. BVB shock Lewandowski restored the old lead when he headed a cross from Joshua Kimmich into the goal from close range.

Borussia dealt with the new setback with amazing morale. She turned the game around with some impressive high-speed football. Of all people, Reus, who had previously missed a few chances, scored with a well-placed shot to equalize. Six minutes later, Joker Alcácer completed a counterattack with his eighth goal of the season. Borussia's victory was thus wrapped up in dry cloths - also because Bayern had a goal from Lewandowski rightly disallowed for offside in the last minute.
