BVB delivers: Dortmund are leaders

Effective, strong nerves and in some phases even masterful – Borussia Dortmund has FC Bayern's mistake used this time and replaced the weak record champions at the top of the Bundesliga table. Unlike the embarrassing performance a week ago in Stuttgart (3:3), coach Eden Terzic's team kept their nerve this time and stormed into first place with a 4-0 (3-0) win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham (19th), Donyell Malen (24th/66th) and Mats Hummels (41st) in front of 81 spectators on Saturday at the sold-out Signal Iduna Park, BVB is one point ahead of the team five match days before the end of the season Champions of the past ten years from Munich.

Bayern's 1-3 defeat in Mainz a few hours earlier caused great anticipation in the stands. And BVB quickly created a great atmosphere. After a slow start to the game with slight field advantages but no chances to score in the first 15 minutes, BVB took advantage of their first two opportunities to take a 2-0 lead. The English international Bellingham refined a remarkable combination between Raphael Guerreiro and Julian Brandt with a well-placed low shot into the right corner to make it 1-0 to much acclaim.

This hit broke the restraint. From then on, both teams delivered a remarkable and open exchange of blows with plenty of goal area scenes. Just five minutes after taking the lead, Dortmund had another reason to celebrate. After a header assist from Karim Adeyemi, Malen was there from close range and scored in the fifth game in a row.

Eintracht responded with furious attacks and came close to scoring with a shot from Randal Kolo Muani (26') and a header from Aurelio Buta (34'), but were denied by BVB keeper Gregor Kobel. And was unlucky that the opponent continued to be very effective. After a missed big chance from Adeyemi (31st), central defender Hummels struck the next blow against Eintracht in the middle of Frankfurt's pressure phase. The 2014 world champion headed a cross from Guerreiro into the net and gave BVB a 3-0 lead before half-time.

With the feeling of a clear lead, BVB took it easy after the restart, but retained control of the game. Against the now more passive Eintracht, it was initially enough for Dortmund to keep the ball in their own ranks for a long time and consistently protect their own goal. But they capitalized again on the speed of Adeyemi and Malen. Malen used Adeyemi's pass to score his second goal. This meant that the Hessians' resistance was finally broken.
