Error festival: Bavaria threatens to fall from the top

Despite a two-goal lead, the German record champions lost 2-3 in the classic at Borussia Mönchengladbach and could be replaced as Bundesliga leaders by RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski (20th, hand penalty according to video evidence) and Leon Goretzka (26th) initially seemed to put the Munich team safely on the road to victory in the tricky away task. But Jonas Hofmann (35th, 45th + 1) and Florian Neuhaus (49th) inflicted their second defeat of the season on Bayern, who had been weak defensively for weeks.

The defending champions had already conceded 15 to 22 goals after 24 games - the last time Bayern had such a vulnerable defense was in the 1981/82 season, when they had already conceded 25 goals at that point.

Before the encounter, coach Hansi Flick had called for a “different attitude” than last time. His team implemented the request even without national player Serge Gnabry (bruise) in the early stages at Borussia Park. But after that, for some inexplicable reason, the series champions shifted down a gear and the hosts got better and better into the game. Bayern showed well-known defensive vulnerabilities and Gladbach struck twice before the break. For both goals, captain Lars Stindl played the ball into the interface to Hofmann, who kept his nerve in front of Manuel Neuer. The national goalkeeper shouted his frustration loudly. When the first goal was conceded, Benjamin Pavard and Sane lost the ball while playing together on the right side, and Kimmich didn't do a good job of equalizing.

Munich's defensive mistakes continued even after the change. Niklas Süle played the ball unchallenged into Gladbach's feet. Hofmann put Neuhaus in the spotlight, who scored from the edge of the penalty area, making it 0-1. Bayern now ran, but the equalizer was no longer possible.
