Back at the top: Bayern are shaking their way to victory

As the new frontrunners, the Munich team celebrated a 2-0 win against bottom-placed Hertha BSC on Sunday after a long, fruitless and inefficient run. Serge Gnabry (69th minute) and Kingsley Coman (79th) saved coach Thomas Tuchel and the Bayern bosses from a difficult afternoon. “Only FCB will become German champions,” it echoed loudly through the Munich arena.

After BVB only managed a hotly debated 1-1 draw at VfL Bochum on Friday, Bayern, led by Joshua Kimmich, who set up two goals, are once again leading the Bundesliga table by one point four match days before the end of the season. Despite self-sacrificing defensive work, the Berliners of coach Pal Dardai, who have been severely weakened by replacements, are on their way to the second league after the next defeat and (partial) success of the competition. The gap to the relegation place is six points.

As in the best of times as a leading duo, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß sat together in the official gallery. But they didn't see a Bayern performance inspired by the BVB draw. The club you love had plenty of ball possession, lots of corners and shot attempts. Rummenigge and Honorary President Hoeneß were only able to celebrate the goal in the final phase against the defensively weak bottom of the Bundesliga. Hoeneß had imagined things differently when he talked shop with Tuchel during a much-admired visit to the training ground this week.

Bavaria is having a hard time The Munich team, again without captain Thomas Müller in the starting line-up, lacked the pace and finesse to overcome the defensive Hertha team. The performance in front of 75 spectators was further proof that an enforcer is missing in the attack center. Sadio Mané, who was again called up at the front in place of the still injured Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, lacked precision and timing. The criticized Bayern bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic watched the very committed but late successful performance on the pitch with dissatisfied faces. They breathed a sigh of relief.

Hertha keeper Oliver Christensen used two good shots from Coman (35th) and Gnabry (41st) to excel. That wasn't enough for the fans eager for their eleventh title in a row - there were a lot of whistles at half time. This also happened after Coman fell in the penalty area (27th). Referee Patrick Ittrich, whose colleague Sascha Stegemann was heavily criticized for the Dortmund draw, rightly did not point to the penalty spot.

Mané (48th) and Matthijs de Ligt (50th) with two headers initiated a superior second half, in which Tuchel brought in further offensive power by bringing in Leroy Sané, and Müller also came on. But the 49-year-old coach was not at least visibly satisfied with his appearance on the sidelines for a long time. Freed, he took a seat on the bench after Gnabry took the lead - after four competitive games without a win, he was finally able to celebrate another success. After Coman's goal, a smile crossed his face.
