Premier League season preview: The hunt for City is on

This weekend marks the start of the season for one of the five major leagues in Europe. It starts with the English Premier League. With the six top teams (Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal) another great battle for the championship awaits. But the Premier League is also always good for surprises and unique success stories. The best example is the sensational championship of underdog Leicester City from the 2015/2016 season. So just sit back and enjoy the new Premier League season with its great football. One of the title favorites will start on August 10th. Manchester United hosts Leicester City at Old Trafford at 21 p.m. The first top match between Arsenal and Manchester City follows on Sunday.

The favorites Manchester City starts the season as the top favorites and defending champions. Pep Guardiola's team dominated the league at will last year and were crowned champions with a whopping 19 points lead. In terms of play, the “Citicens” are a feast for the eyes and their personnel has been improved again with the transfer of Riyad Mahrez for 60 million. Anything other than the fight for the championship would be a huge surprise.

Liverpool are the masters of the transfer market. A sum of 182 million euros was invested in Alisson, Keita, Fabinho and Shaqiri. With the exception of the Swiss Shaqiri, everyone else is planned for the starting eleven. The “Reds” have strengthened significantly compared to the previous season. If the defense doesn't suffer too much from Jürgen Klopp's attacking football, Liverpool will be Manchester City's biggest challenger.

Unlike Liverpool, Manchester United is considered the big loser of the transfer phase. Coach Jose Mourinho's much-heralded transfer offensive failed to materialize. Only the Brazilian Fred could be brought in, all other goals were missed. They wanted to strengthen themselves with a top-class player, especially in central defense (Boateng, Godin), but all efforts went wrong. Pessimism is already spreading among the “Red Devils” fan base and they see third place as a realistic goal for the season. Actually not enough for a club of the caliber of Manchester United.

Chelsea starts the season as a big unknown. After the postponed separation with Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri was only introduced as the new coach in mid-July. This affected the preparation for the season, and it could still take a little time for the team to internalize the new coach's game idea. The squad was strengthened with Sarri's dream player Jorghino (57 million euros) and the new record transfer Kepa (80 million euros). It will be important for the “Blues” to start the season well so as not to lose many points until the new game philosophy is internalized.

After 22 years, Arsene Wenger threw in the towel at Arsenal last May. Unai Emery will manage the Frenchman's legacy and the simultaneous restart at the London club. However, the new coach can't do much wrong, as Arsenal's last few years have been very weak and things can only go uphill. In terms of the squad, you can't quite keep up with the other top clubs and fourth place will be Arsenal's declared goal for the season.

Unlike most Premier League clubs, Tottenham did not sign a single new player. You trust in the tried and tested method that worked excellently last season. With Harry Kane they also have one of the best center forwards in the world. It will depend on his goals whether the “Spurs” can have a say in the title. Newcomers with crazy transfer spending The two newly promoted Wolverhampton and Fulham spent a total of over 180 million euros on new players. This madness is possible because of the TV money in England. A promoted or relegated team from the Premier League gets the equivalent of the German champions Bayern Munich. Despite these expenses, the two newcomers will have nothing to do with the top places and will have to make do with a place in the middle of the field.
