Tonali again charged with illegal betting

Italian international Sandro Tonali has been charged again over alleged illegal betting.

As the English Football Association FA announced on Thursday, the currently suspended midfielder from Premier League club Newcastle United is said to have violated the FA betting rules and placed bets on football games a total of 12 times between August 12th and October 2023th, 50. The 23-year-old Tonali has until April 5th to respond to the allegations.

Since last October, Tonali has been serving a ten-month ban from the Italian football association FIGC because of his involvement in a betting scandal, and he also had to undergo therapy for eight months. If Tonali is convicted again in England, things could get even worse.

Tonali deeper and deeper into the swamp

Tonali admitted that he had also bet on his own team's games during his time at AC Milan. His lawyer said at the time that he was addicted to gambling. The Italian only moved to England last summer for more than 63 million euros.

Newcastle United acknowledges the charges against Tonali “in connection with alleged breaches of the FA betting rules,” the club said in a statement on Thursday. “Sandro continues to fully comply with the relevant investigations and retains the club’s full support.” Due to the ongoing process, neither the club nor Tonali will make any further comments for the time being, it said.
