Real Madrid cannot capitalize on Barca's mistake

After champions Barcelona did not get beyond a 2:2 (0:1) draw at CA Osasuna on Saturday, Madrid also played 2:2 (1:1) at FC Villarreal. Of all people, Gareth Bale, who was recently unwanted, prevented anything worse from happening. After three matchdays, Madrid (5 points) and Barca (4) are only in the unusual middle of the table.

The big beneficiary of the major competitors' weak start to the season is Atletico Madrid. The runner-up had to stretch a lot in the 3:2 (1:2) against SD Eibar, but is now at the top with the maximum score of nine points. After a 0-2 deficit, the 126 million euro new signing Joao Felix (27th), Victor Vitolo (52nd) and the Ghanaian Thomas (90th) turned the game around at the Wanda Metropolitano.

In Villarreal it was Bale, of all people, who at least saved Real a point. The Welshman, whose planned sale had fallen through, equalized after being behind twice (45+1./86.); the first goal was elegantly prepared by ex-Frankfurt player Luka Jovic with a backheel trick. In stoppage time, Bale was sent off with a yellow-red card after receiving two yellow cards within three minutes. Toni Kroos played well for the Royals but was unable to put his stamp on the game.
