71 years later: Turin commemorates the Superga tragedy

Four Scudetti in a row, the best players in the country under contract and, to top it off, an Italian national team in which ten of the eleven regulars earned their money at Torino. No wonder that the team went down in calcio history as the “Grande Torino”. The tragedy of Superga On May 4, 1949, the disaster finally happened that almost wiped out an entire club and claimed 31 lives. On the return flight from a friendly match in Lisbon, the plane hit the Basilica of Superga in thick fog and then crashed into the hills outside Turin. All FC Torino players, coaches and employees who were on board the Fiat G212 were killed in the accident.

In the days that followed, over a million Piedmontese said goodbye to the “Grande Torino”, and on the last train through Turin around half a million people followed the actors who were already revered as legends during their lifetime. The championship subsequently continued and Torino sent its junior team onto the field. The opposing teams also followed suit, and at the end of the season Torino celebrated a sad fifth championship title in a row.
