Absurd captain's armband chaos in Serie A

“Davide Astori’s captain’s armband is beyond question!” said Fiorentina player Cristiano Biraghi. The Florence club is one of three clubs that strictly refuse to wear the new Serie A captain's armband. And Fiorentina captain German Pezzella won't think about wearing another bow around his upper arm in the future either. For the Violets from the Tuscan capital, the captain's armband has a special meaning: it bears the inscription “DA 13”.

With the ribbon that Milan Badelj received as a gift from a small group of fans, Fiorentina remembers their late captain Astori. This should remain the case in the future, even if the Italian Football Association threatens the club with penalties. If it actually comes to that, then “we players will pay the penalty,” said Biraghi, who is currently with the national team.

But the uniform captain's armband is mandatory for all official games in Italy, according to Article 11 of the Lega Serie A statutes. And from next week, when Serie A starts again after the international break, non-compliance with this rule will be punished. De Rossi has not yet spoken out, but has the full support of his club. Roma said they were not thinking of sanctioning the captain. Gomez, on the other hand, had a creative excuse at the start of the season as to why he didn't show up with the bandage on his upper arm.

The association's bandage was simply too big for him, said the 1,65 meter tall Argentine. To then add in an Instagram post with a selection of his captain's armbands: "In today's football, players count less and less."
