a Serie A

SportNews columnist Sigi Heinrich takes on Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo in his latest issue of SIGINSIDE.

Saint Pirlo

With drums and trumpets, Andrea Pirlo was announced as the successor to the sacked Maurizio Sarri in the summer of 2020. The Juventus leadership emphasized several times that it was an experiment. Now the whole thing is in danger of falling apart. In contrast to previous years, Juventus has nothing to do with the awarding of the title. Sigi Heinrich says: “Who knows, maybe the next Juve star is already in the coaching starting blocks. The record player in the series, Gianluigi Buffon, has ended his career.”

It wasn't that long ago that Andrea Pirlo was still sitting at school. In a figurative sense, of course. A year ago he completed his coaching course at Coverciano, the football academy of the Italian Football Association. His thesis focused on winning the ball early and pressing hard. Modern football as it is played everywhere in Europe. Only in Italy it hasn't really caught on yet and not at all at Juventus.
