Napoli celebrates a work victory against Lazio

As part of the 20th matchday in Serie A, Napoli met Lazio on Sunday evening. From the start it was a game of equals, and there were some good scoring opportunities in the first half hour. Napoli's Arkadiusz Milik alone had the home team's lead several times.

In the 34th minute it was José Callejón who, after a pass from Dries Mertens, gave Napoli the lead they deserved at the time. Just three minutes later, Milik made it 2-0 with a precise free kick into the top right corner.

In the second half, the guests from the capital once again presented themselves on equal terms for long stretches of the game and were rewarded with a goal after 65 minutes: Ciro Immobilien reduced the score to 1:2.

After around 70 minutes, Lazio's Francesco Acerbi was shown a red card. Nevertheless, the game remained exciting until the end; Napoli had chances to make an early decision, but did not take advantage of them. In around five minutes of stoppage time, Lazio tried to use the crowbar again, but there were no clear chances to score and the score remained 2-1 for Napoli.

Carlo Ancelotti's team was able to extend their lead over third-placed Inter and initially moved within six points of leaders Juve.

Lazio once again found themselves on equal terms against a top team and again didn't pick up any points. The team from the capital is currently in fifth place. City rivals Roma moved past Lazio with their 3-2 win against Torino on Saturday and are on course for the Champions League.

Atalanta also underlined its European Cup ambitions on Sunday. The team from Bergamo celebrated a smooth 5-0 win at Frosinone in the lunchtime game. Duvan Zapata scored four goals. He is now joint top scorer with Sampdoria's Fabio Quagliarella, who scored twice in the 3-3 draw in Florence on Sunday, and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo with 14 goals. Inter had already had to be content with a 0-0 draw against Sassuolo on Saturday (see own report) . Defending champions Juventus host Chievo on Monday evening.
