Napoli dismantles Empoli

Already in the second minute, SSC became a goal threat: A short pass landed to Dries Mertens, who had plenty of space in the penalty area and shot ice-cold. But the ball landed just outside the left post and out of bounds. The guests from Tuscany were not impressed by this, six minutes later Luca Antonelli had the opening goal on his feet, thanks to the luck of the ball he took a rebound and just had to shoot into the goal. But somehow he kicked the ball well over the goal. A minute later, the home team celebrated: Lorenzo Insigne took a hard-played pass from Kalidou Koulibaly beautifully in the penalty area, outplayed an opponent and slammed the ball into the lower right side for a 1-0 lead. In the 38th minute, the Italian international gave the ball to Mertens, his long shot surprised Empoli keeper Ivan Provedel and the ball landed in the bottom right corner. The score went into the break at 2-0.

After the break, Provedel rehabilitated himself after the mistake to make it 2-0. In the 53rd minute, Napoli defender Elseid Hysai, who had stepped up, confused the entire Empoli defense and hit the ball towards the bottom left corner - but Provedel made a great save. Empoli scored the goal to make it 2-1 in the 58th minute: Francesco Caputo caught a pass in the penalty area and fired the ball into the bottom left corner - Napoli goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis was powerless. Nevertheless, the second place in the table did not wobble, on the contrary. With great insight, Mertens sank the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area in the 64th minute to make it 3-1; the Belgian immediately understood that Provedel was too far in front of the line. Things got really exciting in the last quarter of an hour: Empoli quickly executed a corner with a short pass, Giovanni Di Lorenzo placed a header from the penalty spot sharply under the crossbar, Karnezis shone with a strong goalkeeping performance. Napoli wanted more and in the 90th minute, newly substituted Arkadiusz Milik was perfectly put in the spotlight by Mertens, the Pole fired the ball into the top right corner to make it 4-1. In stoppage time, Mertens scored a hat trick, taking a pass from Insigne as he ran. Empoli goalkeeper Provedel had already left his penalty area and arrived a little too late - Mertens put the final point in the game with the score 5-1.

At the start of the eleventh matchday, Carlo Ancelotti's team put a lot forward in the fight for second place in the competition, while Empoli remained stuck in the bottom of the table.

Napoli dismantles Empoli

At home in the San Paolo Stadium, Napoli went about the game very confidently. The home side were already 2-0 up against Empoli at half-time, and in the end it was a clear 5-1 home win.
