Sassuolo in Vipiteno: The slightly different Serie A club

Sassuolo has been in Sterzing for the summer training camp since Sunday. The professional footballers are accommodated in the Hotel Alima in Ratschings and training takes place on the football field in Vipiteno. It is not the first time for the Green-Blacks in South Tyrol. They have been to Ratschings twice since 2018, and previously also to Vinschgau (Mals and Prad) a few times. Sassuolo's three European champions Domenico Berardi, Manuel Locatelli and Giacomo Raspadori are not there.

Sassuolo has experienced a lot in its more than 100-year club history. In the 80s, Sassuolo began to settle into the professional football business and oscillated between Serie C1 and Serie D. The financial uncertainty changed after the turn of the millennium, when the Mapei company became the main sponsor in 2002. Mapei is an international company that produces construction chemical products for wall and floor coverings. The owner of the company at that time was Giorgio Squinzi. In 2003 he took over the club as owner - from then on the “Mapei era” began. Giorgio Squinzi – a football-loving visionary Because Squinzi wasn't one of those investors/owners who just poured money into the club to buy talented players and thereby achieve success. Squinzi approached the project with the same attitude as he did at Mapei. He wanted to set up something long-term that relied primarily on his own strengths, i.e. the youth players. And he was right.

A team was formed that developed step by step. In 2008, under Massimiliano Allegri, the current Juventus coach, the team achieved their first promotion to Serie B. In 2013, Sassuolo opened the door to Serie A under coach Eusebio Di Francesco. Since the post-war period, no club from a city as small as Sassuolo has achieved promotion to the Italian football upper echelon. Since then, Sassuolo has always stayed in Serie A and has tripped up the big clubs several times. “Don’t take a step back, that’s important to me. “At Mapei, but also at Sassuolo,” Squinzi commented on his team’s successful run a few years ago.

In 2016, a place on the international stage was secured with 6th place in the table. On July 28, 2016, Sassuolo celebrated their debut on the European stage in the Europa League qualifying game against FC Luzern. Since 2013, Sassuolo has played its home games at the Mapei Stadium (21.500 seats). The Mapei Football Center was opened in 2019: a state-of-the-art club facility. In the same year, Giorgio Squinzi, who described the Mapei Football Center as a “gift for the entire population of Sassuolo”, died.
