VAR, penalty chaos and Calhanoglu: Inter wins Derby d'Italia

While Inter can continue to dream of defending their title, Juventus may have said goodbye to the championship race. The Italian record champions were more active and more dangerous for long periods of the game, had more possession of the ball and had a clear increase in chances of 22 to 5 shots on goal.

In the end, Inter were able to celebrate a narrow 1-0 victory - especially thanks to a few strange minutes shortly before half-time. Up to now there had been few guests from Milan. In the 43rd minute, referee Massimiliano Irrati pointed to the penalty spot. Inter's Denzel Dumfries was attacked by Alex Sandro in the Juve penalty area and was also hit on the ball by Alvaro Morata. Even after a VAR check, the penalty remained despite Juve's protests.

Hakan Calhanoglu took responsibility but was denied by Wojciech Szczesny. When it came to the follow-up shot, things got heated in the Juve penalty area, and Adrien Rabiot finally put the ball into his own goal: Inter's goal, however, didn't count because Calhanoglu had committed a foul on Juve's Danilo in the tangle. The VAR kicked in again. Although the goal was preceded by a foul, after Szczesny's missed shot and save, Juves De Ligt ran into the penalty area too early. The penalty was retaken. Calhanoglu stepped up again – and this time scored safely.

Juve also had chances in the second half; former Gladbacher Denis Zakaria, for example, was denied after a great solo by Inter goalie Samir Handanovic, who directed the ball onto the post with a strong save. In the end it remained 2-1 for the Milanese.

Defending champion Inter is now third, three points behind city rivals Milan, and both teams still have eight matches to play. Second Napoli, who are tied on points with Milan, only have seven games left. The southern Italians won 3-1 at Atalanta in the afternoon.
