In a post on Instagram, Costa spoke of a “lousy” and “ugly” action. The 28-year-old was punished with a red card (90th + 3). He also faces a long ban and consequences within the club.

“I made a terrible mistake,” wrote former Bayern professional Costa. “I would like to make it clear that this individual case does not reflect how I have behaved so far in my career,” he added.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri announced sanctions for the perpetrator. "Such incidents should not happen," he said. "It is only right that he should be punished - and that will certainly happen."

Costa's derailment was preceded by a foul by his opponent. Costa initially responds with an elbow strike. Shortly afterwards, Sassuolo's Khouma Babacar (90th + 1) scored the next goal after Cristiano Ronaldo's brace (50th, 65th), after which Costa went to headbutt Di Francesco. Former world champion Sami Khedira dragged his teammate away and Costa saw yellow. After a short exchange of words after a restart, he finally spat in his opponent's face from close range. After the video assistant switched on, the Brazilian was thrown off the pitch.
