From fighter to tactician: Gattuso stays at Milan

Cristian Brocchi, Clarence Seedorf and Filippo Inzaghi were too present. All three former Milan players. All three failed in the coaching bench of the glorious Rossoneri. Now Gennaro Gattuso, the fourth. And in all likelihood the next Milan legend to burn his fingers on the moody diva.

Gattuso did a good job, especially at Pisa If the reactions weren't so mocking, one could have said: Okay, what has Gattuso achieved so far? His coaching record was actually rather modest. Player-coach at Sion, positions at Palermo, Crete and Pisa. This is not what a future Milan coach's CV looks like. At least not in the minds of many.

Two things were forgotten. On the one hand, Milan is no longer a top club. The Rossoneri were last champions in 2011. The players back then: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Andrea Pirlo, the coach was Massimiliano Allegri. A year and a half later he was driven from the farm with disgrace and disgrace. And subsequently showed at Juventus that he is a top coach.

It's similar with Gattuso. And here comes the second fact that was forgotten when the Calabrese took over as coach at Milan. Gattuso did an excellent job, especially at Pisa. The starting situation for the bankrupt Tuscans was miserable. Nevertheless, they managed to get promoted to Serie B. Gattuso quit a job there (“You can’t work in this club”) and ended up returning. Without money and with a desolate squad, Pisa played for a long time to stay in the league. From emergency solution to ideal candidate Vincenzo Montella resigned as Milan coach at the end of November. Gattuso, who was meanwhile looking after the Milan juniors, was promoted. At first things continued as they had left off under Montella. But over time, Gattuso's handwriting became clear.

The former midfielder doesn't just rely on the virtues that made him strong as a player - even if it often comes across that way in interviews or press conferences. Run, fight, bite. Gattuso is a modern coach. His teams are well organized, press properly and are supposed to build the game from the defense.

Now his contract is being extended. Until 2021. The salary increases from 120.000 to two million euros. Only one thing won't change: his attitude to the game. Gattuso always wants to be 100 percent there. Whether as a player or now as a coach: “Give everything and always play with the knife between your teeth. That’s my philosophy.”
