Cologne (SID) The Italian first division soccer team AC Fiorentina announced the death of team captain Davide Astori on Sunday. The 31-year-old is one of a number of footballers who died suddenly during their playing careers. The SID has put together a list: October 1977: Renato Curi (24) collapses at the start of the second half during AC Perugia's Serie A game against Juventus. He cannot be revived. February 1993: The Romanian Michael Klein (33) dies of heart failure during a running training session with the Bayer Uerdingen team. April 1998: After training, second division professional Axel Jüptner (28) from Carl Zeiss Jena suffers a heart attack and dies. The cause was a previously undetected inflammation of the heart muscle. June 2003: National player Marc-Vivien Foe (28) from Cameroon collapses in the semi-final of the Confederation Cup against Colombia in Lyon. The reason: sudden heart failure. January 2004: The Hungarian international Miklos Feher (24) collapses in the Portuguese first division match between Vitoria Guimaraes and Benfica Lisbon. He dies shortly afterwards. August 2007: The Spaniard Antonio Puerta (22) suffered a collapse in Sevilla FC's encounter with Getafe FC. After suffering multiple cardiac arrests and organ failure, he died in hospital three days later. December 2007: Phil O'Donnell (35) from Scottish Premier League club Motherwell FC collapses during a league game against Dundee United. After a short treatment, he died of heart failure in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. August 2009: Daniel Jarque (26), captain of first division club Espanyol Barcelona and former Spanish U21 national team player, dies of heart failure during a training camp. November 2009: Mexican national player Antonio de Nigris (31) from Greek first division club AE Larissa dies in his home as a result of a heart defect. August 2011: Japan's former international Naoki Matsuda (34) dies after suffering a circulatory collapse during training at his club Matsumoto Yamaga two days earlier. April 2012: Piermario Morosini (25) from the Italian second division club Livorno Calcio dies after a heart attack during the Serie B game at Pescara Calcio. August 2012: The Nigerian Henry Ihelwere Chinonso (21) from the Romanian second division team Delta Tulcea suffers a cardiorespiratory arrest during a test match and dies a short time later. July 2015: Serbian Goran Gogic (29) collapses and dies at his Chinese club Qingdao Hainiu. May 2016: Cameroonian Patrick Ekeng (26) collapses shortly after being substituted in the Romanian league game between Dinamo Bucharest and FC Viitorul Constanta and cannot be revived. June 2017: Ivorian international Cheik Tiote collapses during training with his team Beijing Enterprises. He will only be 30 years old. March 2018: Italian international Davide Astori (31) from Fiorentina is found dead a few hours before the game against Udinese Calcio. The defender succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest in his sleep.
