Tiger Woods is about to make a comeback after a car accident

There were already rumors a week ago that the five-time Masters champion could compete in the first major tournament of the year. A small report about a secret training round at the facility on Magnolia Lane in the US state of Georgia just over a week ago triggered huge hype. Woods played all 18 holes on the course with his son Charlie and his good friend Justin Thomas. Last Sunday he traveled to Augusta again to resume preparation for the tournament.

But until the press conference, Woods kept a low profile and spoke of a “decision close to the tournament”. The tournament organizers then quickly distributed a one-minute video clip of Woods' training round on social networks, fueling the hype even more.

The ambitious former world number one doesn't just want to play in the Masters, which begins on Thursday. When asked by a journalist whether he could win the Masters, he replied confidently as always: “I can.” But the crucial question for Woods remains: How is his right leg? Can he put full weight on his leg, which was broken several times in the accident? Can he walk again without any symptoms? The par 72 golf course is one of the hilliest courses on the US tour and demands a fair amount of fitness from the professionals.

“He looked phenomenal,” 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples said after a quick round with Woods. “If he can run around here for 72 holes, he’ll be able to compete. He’s just too good.”

His last official PGA tournament was the Masters in November 2020, which was not held at the usual spring date that year due to the corona pandemic. The serious accident then occurred in February 2021. Woods drove off the road south of Los Angeles, rolled over several times and suffered complex fractures to his right leg. He spent three weeks in the hospital and then another three months in a hospital bed at his home in Florida. Then he began rehab and thus his own preparation for the Masters.
