Woods makes the cut at the Masters

14 months after his serious car accident, the 46-year-old Californian played a solid round of 74 on Friday (local time) despite starting difficulties and made the cut with a total of 145 strokes in the traditional major tournament. Before the two final rounds, Woods slipped slightly to tied for 19th place after losing six strokes but also four birdies. But that didn't dampen the euphoria surrounding the 15-time major winner, who even had to fear losing his right leg after his accident in February 2021 south of Los Angeles. As always, the fans accompanied their hero from lane to lane in large numbers and loudly.

“I was unlucky with a few heavy squalls. And I had some bad swings too. After the fourth hole I asked myself, what else could go wrong,” said five-time Masters champion Woods. “But hey, I made the cut and have a chance to play on the weekend.” Stumbling start Woods went on his second round in a dark sweater and mint-colored polo shirt with the third-to-last group and immediately botched the start: He made four bogeys on the first five holes - he had never started a round at the Masters so badly. But after the opening setback, the crowd favorite, who made golf history 25 years ago with his first major victory at the Masters with a record lead of twelve shots, caught himself.

There was hardly any sign of the consequences of the accident: only Woods' gait appeared slightly uneven. In addition, he couldn't really bend his knees to read the greens. “I don't feel as good as I would like to feel. But that’s okay,” said Woods, who made it into the weekend at what is probably the most famous tournament in the world for the 22nd time in a row.

US compatriot Scottie Scheffler is clearly in the lead at the magnificent facility on Magnolia Lane. The 25-year-old world number one coped well with the windy conditions on the hilly par-72 course at the Augusta National Golf Club and played his way to the top of the leaderboard with a round of 67 and a total of 136 strokes. Scheffler is already five strokes ahead of a quartet led by last year's winner Hideki Matsuyama from Japan.

Stewart Cink managed the shot of the day: The 48-year-old American scored an ace on hole 16 that was wildly applauded by the fans - on the 24th birthday of his son Reagan, who accompanied his father as a caddy. “Happy Birthday,” his dad called out to him as he hugged him.
