European boxing champion Baraou turns professional at Sauerland

Hamburg (SID) European amateur boxing champion Abass Baraou turns professional. The 23-year-old welterweight signed a long-term contract with the Sauerland stable. Nisse Sauerland announced this on Monday. "We are very pleased to have Abass in our team. He has all the qualities to make a splash in professional boxing in the coming years and to be among the world's best in the long term," said the promoter. Abass Baraou, born in Aalen, Württemberg, the son of Togolese parents, has been the outstanding German amateur for the past two years. In 2017 he won the European Championship title in Ukraine and took bronze at the World Championships in Hamburg. Baraou also impressed former world champions and former superstars such as Wladimir Klitschko, Henry Maske and David Haye. It was only in the semifinals that he was stopped in the Hanseatic city by London Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias from Cuba. "I have achieved a lot with the amateurs and think that now is the best time to switch to the professionals. With Team Sauerland I have a good partner at my side and I am also happy that my fights are on Sport1 in the free TV," said three-time German champion Baraou, who won the traditional chemistry cup in 2016 and 2017.
