Mayor Klitschko against Corona: “A completely different fight”

“This is a completely different fight,” the mayor of Kiev told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS), “I fight for my city, for the health and lives of millions of people for whom I am responsible.” The former boxing world champion of all classes, who won 45 of his 47 professional fights, was elected mayor of the Ukrainian capital in May 2014. The 48-year-old is now contesting his second term in office despite some resistance; in times of the pandemic, he is required to work 24 hours a day. Every day at 12.00 p.m. he addresses the population in a podcast and appeals: “Please do me a favor: stay at home and take care of yourself!” As a boxer, he used to fight three or four times a year. “As mayor, he fights 365 times a year. In the current pandemic, around the clock, so to speak,” said Klitschko, who began taking measures to prevent the spread of the virus in the city of three million people early on. He largely restricted public life and had face masks purchased. China flies in additional necessary protection and aid. Klitschko's early initiative has a special reason: Wuhan in China, the epicenter of the epidemic that was sealed off for weeks, is Kiev's sister city. “Straw widower” Klitschko Kiev is currently complaining about more than 160 cases of infection with the coronavirus; last Thursday, Klitschko had to report the first death in the city: “I am deeply sad to have to announce that we have the first death in Kiev due to the virus. The dead man is a 70-year-old man.” Klitschko is currently a “straw widower” in Kiev. His wife Natalia looks after the house in Hamburg. The children live in London for their education. Brother Vladimir is at his home in Florida. And so Vitali lives his life motto in Kiev: “There is no victory without a fight.”
