Harsh punishment: World Wrestling Federation bans all DRL athletes

Frankfurt/Main (SID) The world wrestling association UWW has pronounced the expected harsh punishments against the “separatists” of the German Wrestling League (DRL). The UWW Disciplinary Commission suspended all DRL athletes for one year. The sanction applies to all national and international competitions. In addition, the national associations have to pay a fine of between 1700 and 2500 euros for each athlete who competes in the DRL. Ten German wrestlers have competed in the DRL so far. According to President Manfred Werner, the German Wrestling Federation (DRB) is therefore expecting a fine of almost 20.000 euros, which it may want to demand back from the DRL clubs (ASV Nendingen, KSV Isprungen, VfK Schifferstadt, KAV Mansfelder Land and Germania Weingarten). "We have to pay the fine first. That's what we've got from this absurd construct. We will now consult with our lawyers about how we should proceed," Werner told the SID: "We would be a bad association if we didn't try would get the money back from us." The intention of the DRL clubs was to professionalize wrestling. That's why they broke away from the DRB and founded their own league. The “separatists” have thus entered into competition with the Bundesliga under the umbrella of the DRB. The UWW had sided with the DRB and threatened all DRL wrestlers with bans - this has now been implemented. "The DRL is an organization that is not recognized as a member of the UWW by either the UWW or the DRB. The DRL has no authorization to organize a league," the UWW explained its sanctions: "The wrestlers who competed in the DRL have not applied for, and as a result have not received, any transfer authorization to participate in this unauthorized league. By participating, they have violated the UWW Bylaws." Werner recently described the DRL as a "miserable bunch of five clubs": "The DRL thinks professional sport has to be outsourced. But we don't have any professionals in wrestling - when will they get that? We are amateurs - something else gives our structure not here." The DRL applies the sanctions around the final between Isprung and Schifferstadt (11:13 in the first leg). If the penalties stand despite possible legal challenges, it could be the first and last DRL final.
