IOC threatens the world boxing association again with exclusion from the Olympics

Lausanne (SID) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) remains “extremely concerned” about the conditions in the world amateur boxing association AIBA and is therefore again considering excluding the federation from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The IOC announced this on Wednesday after a board meeting. The IOC had already threatened AIBA with this scenario last May and July. The reason is turbulence in the AIBA leadership, the unclear financial situation and the association's anti-doping program. According to the IOC, this situation is “not only bad for the reputation of AIBA, but also for sport in general.” However, the IOC announced that otherwise an Olympic boxing tournament without the participation of AIBA would be the goal because they wanted to "protect the athletes' Olympic dream." Long-suspended former AIBA president Wu Ching-Kuo was banned for life on Tuesday for large-scale financial mismanagement. The Taiwanese is said to have accumulated liabilities of over 30 million euros. The only candidate for his successor is apparently the shady interim president Gafur Rachimov. The 66-year-old Uzbek has always been controversial. Because of his involvement in heroin trafficking, he was recently described by the US Treasury Department as one of Uzbekistan's leading criminals. The IOC had expressed “extreme concern” about a possible nomination of Rachimov. The IOC put the financial aid on hold in December.
