Joshua wins unification match against Parker

The Brit won an unspectacular world championship unification fight against New Zealand WBO champion Joseph Parker unanimously on points in Cardiff/Wales on Saturday evening and remained undefeated in his 21st professional fight. For Parker (26) it was the first defeat in the 25th fight - after all, he is the first professional opponent who did not suffer a knockout against Joshua. "Twelve rounds, that was tough, Joseph is a champion," said Joshua: "He had announced a fight, but I knew that this was about finesse. I controlled him, that was important."

Joshua, who defeated Klitschko by knockout in a memorable wrestling match in London last April, also holds the IBF and WBA belts. He now has a duel with the American Deontay Wilder, who successfully defended the WBC crown against the Cuban Luis Ortiz at the beginning of March. "There's no doubt about my plan," Joshua said, "get Wilder in the ring and I'll knock him out. We don't have to go to the US to do it, we can do it here in the UK."

The first rounds of the fight were fairly even, but Joshua came on stronger and increased the speed from the fifth round onwards. The fight got a little wilder for a short time, and Parker was able to score points in this phase. Then Joshua used his greater reach again and repeatedly landed smaller hits to the head and body, which had an effect: Parker seemed to run out of strength from the eighth round onwards.

Joshua now had control of the fight and a clear advantage on the scorecards, so the Briton hardly took any unnecessary risks. Parker found no means and was no longer able to cause difficulties for the opponent.
