Taekwondo: Bronze for Alexander Zadra at the European Championships in Istanbul

Alexander Zadra shouldn't have even taken part in the European club championships in Istanbul. At the Insubria Cup in Busto Arsizio, the martial artist completely exhausted himself due to the flu, but was still able to win the competition in his category.

Since the registration, flight and hotel were already booked, we decided to take him with us anyway. Alexander Zadra had lost 3 kg in weight and therefore had to fight in the lower weight class -78 kg instead of his usual +78 kg U17 youth class. After a relatively good draw, the 15-year-old Kurtatscher met the strong Akhmadi Nurkhassym from Kazakhstan. Already in the first round it was clear that Zadra was miles away from his usual form and that his victory at the Insubria Cup shortly before and the current course of antibiotics had robbed him of all his strength.

But he tried everything to at least win a medal at these European Championships. After a 7:7 at the end of the fourth round, Zadra ultimately had the upper hand over the Kazakhs. Because of his poor health, it was decided not to let him continue fighting for gold.

More top spots The other taekwondokas from ASV Zadra-fighting/rothoblaas from Kurtatsch also took top places. Stefanie Kerschbamer achieved fifth place in the U17 youth class -68 kg, while Markus Zadra (53) had to compete in the men's super heavyweight class +87 against Russian European champion Georgii Tandelov, 30 years his junior. Markus Zadra, the oldest fighter in the entire World Taekwondo Federation World Cup league, came in ninth. Julia Kerschbamer achieved 57th place in the women's -74 kg and Rene Calliari in the men's -13 kg. Tobias Santer lost by just one point to the national fighter from Finland in the -63 kg men's class and came in 24th.

Taekwondo: Bronze for Alexander Zadra at the European Championships in Istanbul

Alexander Zadra from ASV Zadra-fighting/rothoblaas from Kurtatsch won bronze at the European Club Championships in Turkey despite being weakened by the flu. With 1.130 taekwondo athletes, a new participant record was set.
