Teakwondokas win 3 medals at European Masters Games

There are two performance classes for the Masters Teakwondokas. The A “competitive” class includes former Olympic, world and European championship participants. The B class “recreational” is divided into two age groups: over 35 years and over 45 years.

In the A class, Markus Zadra (Zadra Fighting), as the reigning Master ETU European Champion over 50 years old, met the Spaniard Juan Ramon Benitez Punal, reigning Master ETU European Champion up to 50 years old, in the semi-finals. With 30 seconds left, Zadra had seemingly already decided the fight at 11:7 when the Spaniard equalized with a spectacular spinning kick and escaped into extra time. The Iberian then decided this very narrowly. This left Zadra “only” with the bronze medal. All the more annoying for Kurtatscher, because in the final the Spaniard outclassed his American opponent with 14:3 points.

Sensational Sonja Egger Sonja Egger (ASV Taekwando Terlan) offered a sensational performance in the “recreational” B class in the category up to 57 kg over 45 years old. She won the gold medal straight away. In the semifinals she won 10:8 against her much higher rated American opponent. What was crucial was that she always attacked from the right distance and skilfully exploited her size advantage. The final was just a formality for Sonia Egger. She confidently beat her Italian opponent 12:3 and deservedly won her class. Bad luck for Karin Negri Karin Negri (Zadra Fighting) narrowly missed the gold medal by just one point in the “recreational” B class over 67 kg over 45 years, even though she had scored the only valid point in the final. Unfortunately, two warnings against the French athlete and winner of the 2 European Masters Games were her downfall and the final ended 2015-2 for the Frenchwoman. Karin Negri had already won the World Masters Games in 1.

Rene Calliari and Gianluca Battistel also took part in the “recreational” B class in the categories over 35 years up to 80 kg and over 45 years up to 68 kg. Both took 9th place in their classes. Calliari lost in the qualifying matches against a strong athlete from Sweden and Battistel against a very strong athlete from Spain.

Markus Zadra also took part in the swimming and archery disciplines at these European Masters Games.

Teakwondokas win 3 medals at European Masters Games

The South Tyrolean Taekwondo Masters won three medals at the “European Masters Games” in Turin. 3 athletes from 126 nations took part in this Korean martial art. Medals were also awarded in a further 16 sports.
