In front of 94.000 at Wembley: Tyson Fury says goodbye

After Tyson Fury reiterated his retirement, he sang a final serenade for the 94.000 fans at Wembley Stadium. “I have something for you,” whispered the superstar, who was also undefeated in his 33rd fight, into the London night and began the evergreen “American Pie”. If Fury keeps his word, boxing will not only lose one of the best heavyweights in history, but also a unique entertainer.

And as final as Fury said on this cool spring evening after completing his duty against the hopeless Dillian Whyte, there can actually be no turning back. “I achieved everything I wanted to achieve,” emphasized the 33-year-old. “I retire as the second undefeated heavyweight after Rocky Marciano. I was unbeatable in that game.”

Whyte also felt this, as he stood out due to his unclean boxing in rather unspectacular rounds. In the sixth round, Fury's British compatriot was ready for the knockout - and he got it in impressive fashion. A brutal right uppercut from Fury hit the target and Whyte simply fell over. The challenger briefly pulled himself together, but when he was just staggering around the ring, the referee had seen enough and stopped.

“There is no shame. He fought against the best in the world,” said the barely battle-scarred Fury. This knockout was a fitting end to the career of the “Gypsy King”, who probably has one of the most incredible boxing biographies. After beating Wladimir Klitschko, the man from Manchester was world champion of the four major associations in 2015. A brutal crash followed with positive doping tests, drug addiction, manic depression and suicidal thoughts. But Fury came back – and became world champion again.

Now he is supposedly leaving forever. His wife Paris emphasized this on Sunday night. “He has nothing left to prove. If there was anything else, I'd say do it, Tyson. But there’s nothing left,” said Fury’s sweetheart and then opened a small door. “I think the only reason for a comeback would be a unification fight.”

It probably also depends on the opponent. Fury holds the WBC belt, Oleksandr Ussyk the WBA, WBO and IBF. First, Ussyk will fight the rematch against dethroned champion Anthony Joshua. If Joshua wins, Fury could get into the ring again. After all, both camps had already agreed before Joshua's clear defeat against Ussyk and Fury sees a good chance of winning against his compatriot.

Things are different with Ussyk. The Ukrainian is extremely dangerous and can do exactly what all Fury's opponents failed to do. He goes to the body with quick combinations and then retreats unscathed. Against Ussyk, Fury would be in danger of losing his status as an invincible. So why would he do it? Money would definitely not be a reason. “I have more money than I can spend in a million lifetimes.”
