Individual World Championships in Poland: The last-minute girl wins bronze

Sport writes the most beautiful stories. And in the case of Simone Profanter, several stories come together that ultimately read like a fairy tale. A fairy tale with a happy ending. Simone Profanter wasn't actually scheduled to start at the World Championships in Leszno in Poland. Around two weeks ago, junior player Sandra Lerchner unexpectedly canceled and the Villnößer stepped in for the Palatinate player.

When he arrived in Leszno, Profanter was the unluckiest person to qualify for the individual competition. With 558 pins, she missed the second round on Tuesday by a single wood. With 120 throws you can spend a long time looking for where you lost that one piece of wood. And in the end he is just as smart as before.

Just 24 hours after the unfortunate exit from the World Cup in the individual, Simone Profanter won a precious metal in the sprint discipline. Bad luck and good luck are sometimes so close together. In a sprint, things happen in quick succession. In direct duels, 20 throws (10 full, 10 clearing) are played twice, the winner advances to a round. And Profanter went far. Very far. It wasn't until the semifinals that the final stop was against Ioana Vaidahazan from Romania. But this defeat was bearable for Simone Profanter. She already had bronze at that point. And with that, a week before her 26th birthday, she gave herself the best present. Gold went to the Czech Hana Wiedermannova, silver went to Vaidahazan. Bronze also went to the second semi-finalist, the German Corinna Kastner. The Hungarian Norbert Kiss won the men's event.

For the other participants from South Tyrol, the short competitions (in addition to the sprint, tandem mixed was also played) were over after one or two rounds at the latest. Two more players, Wolfi Blaas (Neumarkt) and Marion Thaler (Fugger Sterzing), will be in action in the Individual Classic on Thursday. Here, like in a championship game, the game is played against each other in a direct duel (4x30 throw combined).

However, both athletes have a mammoth task ahead of them. Blaas meets Vilmos Zavarko. The Serb is the best bowler in the world in recent years. And he indicated that in the first round. He hit 727 pins and was the only one to surpass the 700 mark. Different spheres simply, considering that Blaas offered an appealing performance with 608 wood. Marion Thaler, on the other hand, has to deal with the Croatian Ines Hasic. She hit 617 “wedges” in qualifying, Thaler qualified for round two with 559 pins.
