The third edition of the ICEFIGHT took place this early afternoon in bright sunshine, relatively pleasant temperatures and a record crowd. As expected, Markus Bendler prevailed among the men in the top-class field of participants, which included the best ice climbers in the world. The North Tyrolean won all three previous editions of the most famous South Tyrolean ice climbing competition.

Bendler's victory was already evident in the qualification and semi-finals, because there the reigning ice climbing world champion showed his class and left his strong competitors behind him. And that despite the fact that the 26-year-old had been out of action for the week with flu. “I'm not in top shape yet, which is why I'm a little surprised that things went so well here. The routes were very demanding, which is exactly what we ice climbers want. A huge compliment to the organizers of the Rabenstein ice tower. You can tell that they pay attention to every little detail. The facility here is absolutely world class,” said Bendler after the award ceremony.

In the final, Bendler reached the top, which is the end of the route, 2.28:35 minutes before the time limit expired, making him almost two minutes faster than second place Evgeny Kryvosheytsev. For him, the stopwatch stopped XNUMX seconds before the eleven-minute deadline. Five seconds behind Kryvosheytsev, Russian Alexey Dengin finished third. A South Tyrolean also reached the final of the top eight. Vice world champion Herbert Staple was eliminated in the second part of the route after a mistake and ended up seventh.

Rainer narrowly beaten In the women's race, an exciting duel developed between the local hero and two-time ICEFIGHT winner Angelika Rainer and the Russian Maria Tolokonina, who won the first World Cup stage in Cheongsong in South Korea. In Rabenstein Tolokonina had the better end.

Both world-class athletes reached the end of the route, but the Russian was almost 20 seconds faster than the reigning ice climbing world champion Rainer. A Russian woman, Anna Gallyamova, also came third.

Like Markus Bendler, Angelika Rainer would have liked to celebrate her third success in a row, which is why she was not entirely satisfied with second place. “I was only 20 seconds behind Maria and of course I’m a little sorry about that. I couldn't immediately find a handle when I got out of the roof, I had to search a bit and then lost time there," analyzed the 24-year-old from Merano.

Barbara Zwerger from Bolzano was also at the start. A week ago in Saas Fee, Zwerger set an exclamation mark with fifth place in the World Cup. In Rabenstein she had to settle for seventh place after a mistake.

In the ICEFIGHT speed competition, the Russian Egor Trapeznikov prevailed, putting Kirill Kolchegoshev in his place in the final. Trapeznikov had already indicated his top form in the qualification on Saturday when he set a new record on the 24,40-meter-high ice giant in 25 seconds. To the surprise of many ice climbing experts, OC boss Reinhard Graf also reached the final of the best eight, which he competed in today in lederhosen.

Satisfied faces

Graf was not only satisfied with his excellent performance in the speed competition, but above all because everything went smoothly again in the third ICEFIGHT. “We were able to experience two sensational days and saw absolute top performances from the world’s best ice climbers. The crowds were enormous and, with 1400 spectators on both days of the competition, far exceeded our expectations. “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the ICEFIGHT and of course also to our many sponsors, without whose help we would not be able to hold such an event,” said Graf.

For the world-class ice climbers, the season continues next weekend with the World Championships in Busteni in Romania, which is also the next World Cup stage. The ice tower in Rabenstein, however, will be open to the public again from Tuesday, February 1st. The date for the ICEFIGHT 2012 has already been set: all ice climbing freaks can already mark January 28th and 29th, 2012 in red on their calendars.
